How do I use find.pcworld? When I type in find.pcworld.com/59227, I should be taken to a site to download Ubuntu 7.10 , but I never get any results.
This happens , no matter what article I try to find using the find.pcworld.com numbers listed in the magazine. I have tried contacting the magazine about

the problem I am having, but have yet to get a response from them. I would think there would be a place on PCWorld's site to just type in any

article number listed in the magazine, and it would take me the site that article is referring to. I need help as to how to properly use the

find.pcworld.com and I don't seem to be able to get it from PCWorld

Hi TerryMills and welcome to PCWorld. :-)

The url worked fine. Here is the official url:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,138903-page,1-c,linux/article.html

Please remember, do not put the find.pcworld url into a search engine. Make sure you put it directly into the address bar of your browser.

I believe that TerryMills was frustrated because the link went to the article, Post-Install Tips for Ubuntu 7.10, rather than to a download site for Ubuntu. At least, that PC World article (Post-Install Tips for Ubuntu 7.10) is what I got when I put the copied address (from TerryMills' message) into my address bar.

Perhaps TerryMills also does not realize that when one puts the "find" address into the address bar, one cannot have anything else there (i.e. the "usual" http or https//www. preface cannot be present).

Hi Never. Yes, that may be true; however, I do not believe the magazine article referenced anything about downloading Ubuntu. Now, I could not immediately find the article after doing a quick scan of the magazine. TerryMills, if this is the case, can you please tell us on what page did you find this article and what edition of the magazine did you find this article so we can confirm this theory?

Hi Terry,

I respond to all of the Letters to the Editor email. We get a lot of spam in that box and it's possible that your email was accidentally deleted. This happens if it doesn't have a subject line or if it doesn't have an explicit subject line. The best thing to do is to leave the automatic "Letters to the Editor" headline.

As the other forum members have told you, the find numbers are URLs, and should be typed into the address bar of your browser like you would type pcworld.com -- simply type the entire URL like find.pcworld.com/59227 and you will be redirected to the page in question.

If you think that you are being taken to an incorrect page, please let me know the issue and page number where the find number appears and I will be happy to check on it and make the change, if necessary.

"Please remember, do not put the find.pcworld url into a search engine. Make sure you put it directly into the address bar of your browser"

I always put find.pcworld.com in the address bar and it takes you where ever it wants to take you, except to find.pcworld.com! Most of the time it will take you to GOOGLE, I wonder why? Now that GOOGLE and so many web sites have hooked up (partnered), especially the sites that allow doubleclick to access their web sites what ever the script that's used to collect information through visitors are causing all kinds of problems. Doubleclick is so busy many times that the site you're trying to visit won't load. Doubleclick was being very subtle prior to confirmation with the FCC, now that it has been done they are back to their old tactics. Google isn't as slick as they think, and people on the Internet need to think about why they are so giving with their free software. I noticed some time ago how aggressive their software was becoming. GOOGLE is offering anyone who's willing a chance to earn money on their web sites, why? They are getting more out of it than meets the eye! Doubleclick is truly messing up PC World's web site. I don't have DSL or Highspeed INTERNET because I can't get it in the area where I live, therefore it is a nightmare trying to download or maneuver PC World's site. Putting find.pcworld.com in the right place doesn't always end you up where you are trying to go. I never had this problem before GOOGLE bought Doubleclick and I installed IE7.

Our find system is proprietary, meaning that we wrote and built it. If you are going to a google page, that's likely because the person who set up that find number put a google URL as the redirect.

How about putting a field on your PC World home page where users can type the number published in the magazine and have it automatically prefixed with "find.pcworld.com/" ? I used to be able to just modify an old URL stored in the browser, but now they redirect before I can type anything. It would make it quicker and easier for your readers go access the page they are seeking - especially if they are clumsy typists like me and have to do it over several times.

Hi JeanFrancois and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

I believe this was an option within the old forum setup; however, people complained because they mistook that field as a search field. Is there a particular find url that is giving you difficulties?

Hi Jean,

We did have this on our site about a year ago, in the red header underneath the search box that is there now. Unfortunately, many people confused the two. They tried to put numbers in the regular search box (which doesn't work) and tried to put words in the number box (which obviously didn't work). We got a number of complaints, so we removed the find number box. We are contemplating another place to put the find number box that will not cause the same confusion, but as of now have no immediate plans to bring it back.

Hi Kellie,

The "Find Number Box" was a great idea and it worked great. Why did you pull it because "some" people couldn't enter the number correctly? That doesn't make sense for the rest of us who could!

I haven't been able "find" any of your articles without it.

Please reinstate it asap and Thanks.

Unfortunately, we can never please everyone. The amount of mail and comments we get asking for it to be added back is about equal to the amount of mail and comments we got from people who were confused about it.

We do have plans to add it back eventually, but no current timeline for that.
