Hi Gang
I just got a brand new desktop hard drive and it dont work
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB ATA100 7200RPM 16MB Cache NCQ Hard Drive

I tried it on two XP Home SP2 machines, & on both I get:
Bios message "Bad hard drive Backup & replace"
In Windoze there is no drive letter for it.
In disk management it shows its there & lists its name & specs, but it says uninitiated, a black bar above it, drive icon coved up by red circle with white bar in the middle of it.
So I suppose that means its hooped.

I tried it with jumper setting "cable select" & "slave" because its a slave.
I hooked it up to the slave connector on the ribbon cable.

Is the any software that might recover it?
tnx

Hi snorg, I'm going to fumble around in the dark here a bit. I think you have to assign a letter to the drive as I don't think it does it automatically. I always thought it preferable using the new HDD for the Master and the old HDD for the slave ( additional storage). I don't understand the bad HDD thing in BioS. It may be a bad HDD out of the box, but I kinda doubt it. I take it, you weren't able to format the new HDD as that needs to be done as well. coastie65

As soon as I put the HD in and booted up Windoze should have given it a drive number.
Windoze found the HD but it could not mount it. So in that case you go into disk management and hit rescan, that should mount it and give it a drive letter, but it cant do it.
Also, it killed floppy and CDROM, the drive light for them wouldnt even come on, but as soon as I take the new HD out they work again.
I found a Seagate HD diagnostic tool, but the download is 103MB and that will take a coon's age with my 28.8 dialup.
I fiddled around enough to kill Master Boot Record so then Windoze would not boot, so I had to use recovery console on the XP CD and I ran FIXMBR (fix master boot record) and that fixed it, if it wernt for that I would have had to reinstall Windoze.

UPDATE
The last thing I tried was I disconnected all hard drives, set up new HD as primary master.
Then I used XP CD to setup Windoze on it, Windoze setup could not see the HD, so I give up.
I have made arrangements to send the HD back, what I dont like is I havta pay the shipping to send it back.

So, Im gonna mark this solved, and give Coastie the points because he tried to help.
