Hello - Does anybody know if it's possible to "reply to all" in response to an email that was sent to me, but keep the cc line the same as the original email? What happens now is that if I reply to all to an email that contains cc'd email addresses, those cc'd emails now go to the main line (the "To" line), and so I have to cut and paste the previously cc'd emails back into the cc line. I hope this makes sense! This doesn't seem like much, but with the amount of emails I respond to, it really grows old. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Avenne and welcome to PCWorld. :-)

Okay, the scenario you suggest is not really possible and here is why:

When you elect to "Reply to All," you are basically saying I want every single email address in the original email to now be the main recipient of the reply email. I have Outlook 2007 and I just tried a simple test. No matter what combination I tried, every carbon copied (CC:) email address appeared as the main "To:" email address in the reply email. There is no way to both use "Reply to All" and keep the copies email addresses as copied in the email reply.

The only exception, and this is just a theory since I do not have access to this, is if you are running Windows Server 2003 Operating System. Using this Operating System may provide more flexibility in how Outlook functions. Again, this is just a theory. All in all, I do not believe there is a way to do the action you ask.

I have Outlook 2002/XP on my current machine and when I hit "reply to all", it keeps the addresses in the Cc field in the Cc field. I don't know if Outlook 2003 does the same or not...I have yet to install it on my new computer. And I don't have Outlook 2007. I am pretty that Entourage on my Mac keeps the Cc field as is as well.

I could not locate a setting that changing this, but did not look too hard at this point.

What email client are you using? Outlook? Outlook Express? Some other email client? Web based email?

I will note that work using Outlook 2003 and it works with Cc addresses staying in the Cc field when hitting "reply to all".

Hi SMax. If you could find the setting within Outlook 2003 that keeps the CC: email addresses in line within a reply, I think that may be exactly what Avenne needs. Additionally, using that, we can try to adjust Outlook 2007 accordingly.

I could not find any such setting. I believe it is a default setting. If so, then I don't know why it is not working for Avenne. The only thing that I can think is that maybe messages sent from certain email clients or certain web based mail may force everything into the To: field, but that seems strange as well.

I don't have Outlook 2007 myself, so I cannot check it right now. But my dad does have it. I will either ask him to check it or check it myself when I am next up at his house.
