Let's see how this flies...

This is a music trivia thread. You can ask or answer any questions about music, musicians, recordings, etc., or just discuss any musical topic you feel like dicussing. I specified 50 years, but if there is anyone who remembers farther back than that, it's cool. The point is to have fun. :-)

To start it off, here's a question from the late '60s:

Many think that the song "Black Magic Woman" was written by Carlos Santana, when in fact, he only did a cover version of it. Who actually wrote the song, and which group did he play in?

Hi, McBarker, glad to see you didn't forget us! :)

I love that song Black Magic Woman, but I always thought Santana was the originator. It was written by Peter Green, and it was featured in a Fleetwood Mac album; see my Snip below:

Coastie is going to have a field day with this thread, huh Coastie? (he's our resident Trivia Expert.)

HOW FUN!!!

Hi Adama... I been away from the Internet for more than a week (Excel programming work project... <sigh>don't ask!). :_| :-)
You're correct... Peter Green, who was the frontman for Fleetwood Mac back when they were a blues band (before becoming an uber pop band) wrote the song. It was from their first album (in the UK) called appropriately "Fleetwood Mac". Did you have to Google for the answer, or did you already know it?

Please everyone, join in the question asking! Here's another.

Who was Paul McCartney's first high profile love interest in the '60s (Hint: She was in the original version of the movie "Alfie")?

Hi all, It could be interesting if adama didn't answer the question. :p Actually, I had to really think about that one and I wasn't sure if Peter Green wrote it. In the Mid to late fifties, a plane crash took the lives of three prominate Rock and Roll stars. There was a hit song about the incident years later. Who were the stars who died that night? If anybody under 50 answers this they are probably cheating. coastie65

Oh boy! (pardon the pun)... :p That would be Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and I think the other was Richie Valens (sp?), but I'm not sure. The song written later by Don McLean as a tribute was "American Pie". Yes/No?

LOL, you cracked me up!

Now, now, Coastie... this thread is open to everybody, over 50 or under, right? Maybe by cheating a little bit they can learn a little piece of history, don't you think?

(I just had to get in here before you, because once you get a hold of a question, no one can match You!) LOL !http://forums.pcworld.com/legacyimages/

One guy who died in a plane crash was that young singer Holly, I forget his whole name. I can't think of the other two and I may/could be wrong about the year.

Hi mcbarker, BINGO!!! You got the whole thing including the later tribute song. Also your spelling was dead on as well. I'm going to throw out one more. In the late 50s and early 60s, Folk music exploded on the scene with groups such as The Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul, and Mary. Although Peter, Paul and Mary wrote a lot their own material, there was another song writer who furnished a lot of their material such as Blowing in the Wind, who was this songwriter who eventually started performing as well? coastie65

Hey Coastie... This one's easy, but I'm going to give someone else a chance to answer it... I Don't want to hog the thread! :-)

Here's a toughie... Originally recorded in the 1950s, this song was first sung by Peggy Lee. Later versions were recorded by Elvis, Madonna, and Annabella Lwin (my favorite version, which was featured on an episode of the Fox TV show Married With Children). Name that song?

Well, I know the original version of Alfie had Michael Caine playing Alfie. There were a few actresses that appeared with him in that movie. But I cannot place the actress who was with Paul McCartney, sorry.

Here's one only the oldest would remember. A rock group started in the mid sixties with a lead singer named Kenny Rogers had a single hit and then dissappeared. What was the name of the group and the song that made it to the charts??

Kenny Rogers went country shortly there after and didn't do rock anymore but had a few cross-over hits. On the 45 vinyl, what was the song on the flip side of the big hit? A funny song, even for rock.

Well, I don't know if it was sung by Peggy Lee or the other singers you mentioned above, but I think that the Married With Children theme song was "Love & Marriage".... yes/no?
Now I have it stuck in my head.... thanks a lot, McBarker... LOL !http://forums.pcworld.com/legacyimages/

Coastie, yes it was Fever. I think that Annabella Lwin was Philippino, although I'm not absolutely certain. She sang in a band called Bow Wow Wow in the early 80's (she was the girl with the mohawk haircut). Her version of Fever was a little heavy on the synthesizers, but they suited the song. It gained some popularity when it was featured on an episode of Married With Children, where Kelly Bundy does a sexy dance routine on stage with one of the guys from the old Fame TV show. She recorded it as a single while trying to start a solo career in the late 80's. When asked, she said she hated the song, and that it wasn't the style of music that she wanted to pursue, but that her record company insisted on a commercial sounding song for her first single. I think that she still plays around the country, but I don't think she ever made any other recordings.

Hey adama, Gee, everytime I come back here there is another question. I think the answer may be Jane Asher, as she was the girl before Linda. I don't know if she was in Alfie or not. It's been a long time since I've seen that thing. coastie65

Nah!... I wasn't referring to the theme song. "Love and Marriage" was sung by Frank Sinatra. Coastie got it... It was "Fever". :p
