Received Error Message of a Missing or Corrupted File

I have been trying to recover my pc since I had gotten some malware. It took over the whole PC. I put in the startup discs that I made when I first got the PC. It is not working. It keeps telling me that there is a missing or corrupt file.
So, what do I do now? I tried getting it to boot from the discs but it keeps reading the partition on the hard drive, which is srewed up.
By the way it is a Sony Viao. Can anyone help?

Hi Hammerhead, Welcome to the forum. I had a similar problem although I didn't make the additional disks. I had something that was supposed to be a restore/recovery disk as well as a recovery partition. I got mad and bought a copy of windows XP MCE 2005 as that is what I have in here. That was the only way I could recover this thing as the crap that was sent was no good. The only thing I lost was Mico$oft Works which I bought as I needed the Word Processor. I was going to buy a copy of XP MCE anyway, just so I'd have one down the road. I think you can still purchase XP through June, through Newegg or TigerDirect. You would need the disk if you were going to do a repair to recover "lost Files" anyway as those disks they send don't work. coastie65

The discs I made are recovery discs. Near as I can tell they utilize the recovery partition. It is just not working. I have about 40 Gigs of data on my d drive that I need. I saw windows XP in Target for $100. I was contemplating it but there has to be a way to recover my O.S. with out buying this crap again! If there were only more programs associated with MAC. All my stuff is windows only!

Hi hammerhead, Was that XP you saw the full XP Home version or just the upgrade version? I couldn't get anything to work either, but then again I didn't make the other disks that I supposed to make either. My bad there. With a copy of XP, you can fix the OS without losing the other stuff. coastie65

Hi Hammerhead. Since your concerns were not related to the article, your issue has been moved into its own Discussion. For future reference, please do not post troubleshooting concerns within Discussions related to Articles or Columns. This minimizes the chances of your issue being seen by all of the regular forum members.
Now, as for your issue. What is the exact file that the system claims is missing or corrupted? More than likely it is a .dll file.

What is the exact model number of your Sony Vaio? More than likely, Sony may offer a Recovery CD that is associated with your computer's original Operating System. Since you stated that you upgraded, you would just have to upgrade again once you successfully recovery your original Operating System.

Be aware that most recovery partitions or recovery disks would also wipe your data. Thus, if you need that data and you have not been backing up (tsk tsk...had to get on the soap box for a moment at least), then you will want to find a way to get that data off the drive before running either recovery disks, recovery partition, or OS install disks.

:D Hi :
Perhaps your problem should be approached from the perspective of the malware that got on your
computer, which MAY NOT have been properly dealt with !? What is the SPECIFIC Name of your
Operating System ? What is the "Name" of the malware ? What program detected "it" ? Was the
malware placed in "Quarantine" or "Deleted" ?
