I dont know what's up with my CD burner. I regularly burn old files I dont want to delete to CDs (crude, but cheaper than buying a whole new drive, imho), but a while ago, my computer just stopped doing that. Every time I tried to burn it, the Burn wizard would pop up, try to burn the files, but then stop, and say that it cant burn the files. I thought the burner thing just didnt work, because that's pretty much what happened to my last laptop. But then today, I absent-mindedly started to burn a music CD using Windows Media Player. And it worked! I'm very confused by what's going on. Could anyone explain?
Also related is that when I burn certain songs, they dont burn all the way. That is, the first half of the song burns to the cd, but then in playback, it just cuts off and goes to the next song. The only common denominator in this problem is that these songs are all ripped from Youtubes, via vixy.net. Already, the mp3 files I get from that site are weird, because when I play them, they say that they're fourteen minutes long (sometimes even longer) when in reality, they're only three, four minutes long.
I'm running a Windows XP, SP2 (I think), on a Sony Vaio. Please assist!! ?:|

Hi Starry. I have changed your Discussion title to give a clearer indication of your question. For future reference, please be as descriptive as possible in both the heading of your Discussion as well as the post itself.
First, as expressed previously, this is a very gray area within this forum. This Discussion will remain open because you are not specifically asking for assistance on how to download the files. However, just realize that the way you are getting the files may constitute copyright infringement.
Okay, this is a common misconception. When it comes to burning, the CD burner itself is not as likely to be at fault than the burning application. You stated that you used the default Burn Wizard to burn the files downloaded from youtube. However, when you burned a CD using Windows Media Player, it worked fine. The default Burning Utility of Windows XP is okay, at best. If you are going to use an application that you already have, I would stick with Windows Media Player. Now, I have some questions for you:
- Have you tried to use Windows Media Player to burn the downloaded files?
- Do you have any other burning application?

I havent tried to burn the non-media (documents, zips, etc) to a cd, but I just tried to burn the movie files (and they weren't pirated, btw) to a cd as a data disk using Windows Music Player and I got this message: "Windows Media Player encountered an error while burning. Verify that the burner is connected properly and that the disk is clean and not damaged." I dont know how to disconnect my burner and the cd I'm using is a brand new one. I tried again to burn a data disk with WMP with the audio files, and the same message came up. I dont know of any other programs to burn files, except maybe Nero, but I dont have that installed...should I be using that?
And what's a root kit? How will I know which to download?

Hey starry! This might help you along. It's a free burning app. called "BurnAwarefree" , get it here: http://www.download....ition/3000-26464-10784718.html . It is tested and spyware free , also approved by McAfee SiteAdvisor. As for your Rootkit question , I usualy run "F-Secure's" Blacklight. You can read about RootKits here : ,http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/ and once finished your read you could , if you wish , download the free scanner here : http://www.f-secure....ecurity_center/ , . You will find the free app. at the bottom of the page. Hope this will help.
