Hey Everyone! Small question. We have 2003 on all 3 PC's. My youngest is asking for 2007 because after working on an other student's laptop , she said that there are more options in Power Point that she could use for her presentations at school. So, how 'bout it. Do I uninstall first or will Office "Teacher & Student" 2007 simply over write the other. Her Laptop consists of the following ::

HP Compac V2000 14.1 wide screen

AMD Turion 1.8 GHZ

1 Gig of ram

100 GB HDD

ATI Radeon (I believe the 200) 128 megs

Wireless b/g

XP Home sp2

So, do I uninstall first or will it (2007) over write. Thankx Everyone!!!

FLASHORN.

PS> her Birthday on the 21st . Would like to surprise her if it's not to much work.

I honest don't know if it will overwrite 2003 or not. If you want to be safe, you can uninstall it. But, if it does NOT overwrite it, then the worst case should be that you end up with both 2003 and 2007 installed. This should not present any problems other than waste drive space. My gut says it will likely overwrite it, but as it is NOT an upgrade installer, my gut could be wrong (it has happened at least once in my life time...although since my gut is stubborn, it will deny that it has even been wrong! ;) ).

Hey smax! Thanks for the "GUT FEELING"!! , but, this is my daughter we're talking about. You know how University students are? Everything has to be right on the first try. No gut feelings in her decisions so, no trial and error. I would not here the end of it. If it were for me well, I would just go ahead and install and deal with the consequences after. But , Thankx for trying.

You could try it out on a computer OTHER than hers...such as your computer. You said you had 2003 installed on three computers...presumably one is the computer that you use. Thus, you could "experiment" with your computer.

And if you are not sure, then just uninstall 2003 and install 2007. It will not mess up any files/documents. The only potential downside is that it might eliminate settings that might, just might, transfer to the new version if it does overwrite.

Hi Flashorn. SMax's initial assumption is correct. Regarding Office, any newer version will automatically overwrite the previous version. Within the installation wizard, a prompt will come up that says something to the effect of, "Searching for previous versions." Once it find Office 2003, it will prompt you to confirm that you want to overwrite the previous version.. I believe the approximate verbiage is, "Office is preparing to overwrite previous version." or something to that effect.

I remember it did that do me when I went from Office 2003 -> 2007. I will post some screen shots if I can find them.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

This is very interesting. I doubt your daughter will fall in this category; however, it is possible to have more than one version of Office on one computer...just change the installation folder. :-) According to this link, "If you don't change the location, the installation of Microsoft Office (whatever) will overwrite files from previous versions."

In your daughter's case, she now has a choice. If she does not want two versions, which I am presuming she does not, when she installs Office 2007, just make sure the installation folder is not changed. This will automatically overwrite Office 2003. If she does want both versions, simply change the installation folder to another folder, for example: /Program Files/(New Folder Name)/Microsoft Office 2007/

Hey smax! Yes, you're right, I could try it on mine since I just read that a boxed CD is good for three installs but, you see, she has the student version as opposed to ours which is the small business version. I think I will uninstall 2003 this way I will sure.

Thankx smax, always nice to hear from you.

Hey MPH! You said that you have overwritten your copy of 2003 with no ill effects? The link you provided me with says that you can have 2 copies of office but, not for 2007, unless I read it wrong. If you check out this adjoining page, http://kb.iu.edu/data/aupn.html , This is what the warning states

Warning: The default file format for Office 2007 is
incompatible with older versions of Office, including Office 2003. Use
the "Save As" option to save in the older format. Other compatibility
issues may also exist. The Student Technology Centers
(STCs) at Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI are now
running Office 2007.

Did you simply plop in the CD and the wizard did not warn of any conflicts?. If so, I will certainly overwrite but, could you clarify the "warning" for me please. If there is no danger of damaging any files then ,I will overwrite.

Thankx MPH

This is absolutely true. When your daughter upgrades to 2007, she will have to remember that there will be people who do not have 2007 as of yet. In that case, for example, a Word document, she would have to click on the button in the upper left hand corner of the screen, see image:

...and then move the cursor to Save As. A side menu will appear and she would then have to select Word 97-2003 Document so that the document she saves will be compatible with previous Office versions, see image:

That is exactly all I did. Once the installation wizard finds the previous version, you will be informed of this. Now it has been a while since I upgraded but I am almost positive you are prompted that the previous installation will be overwritten. This is all negated if you change the installation folder. If you change the installation folder, she will end up with both versions of Office.

As ~44270] offered, this is about file compatibility of Office 2007 NOT installation issues. Office 2007 uses a new default file format that is based off of the XML format. This means that UNLESS your daughter uses the Save As... method that [~44270] showed you how to do, her files will be saved in a new file format that older versions of Office will NOT be able to read...unless the people using the older versions of Office have downloaded and installed [this file compatibility upgrade for the older versions.

This is only an issue if your daughter needs to share files with people who have NOT upgrade to Office 2007. If she is just using the files on her own computer and does not need to share with anyone, then it will be a none issue. I could also be an issue if she has her files on a thumb/jump drive and needs to make a modification to one or open it up for a presentation (i.e. she is doing a presentation using someone else's computer and has the PowerPoint 2007 file on the thumb drive) and is using a computer that does NOT have Office 2007.

Hey smax! Your explanations are now understood(I understand quickly but, you have to explain a long time). Along with the pics from MPH, I can see how she will have use the new Office. You see, I have to be able to explain to her "How To" . I have this bad habit of having to see things in my mind's eye in order to fully understand how somethings work.(sorta like mapping a procedure) Makes it longer to understand. But once mapped out, I rarely make a mistake on a first try. SO, I guess no secret!! I will now have to ask what she wants to do.

Invaluable Help smax Thank You very much!

Hey MPH! Thats exactly what I was looking for!!Simple question LOL!! Seriously , now I will spend have the time in explanations.A picture is a worth a ...(you get the Picture?) . In the end, Genevieve will have the last word(admin. people, go figure) on weather or not she wants the upgrade. But, seeing as she could save the documents in the other formats, she will probably opt for 2007 If she doesn't understand somethings, I'll ask her to ask you. LOL!!!

Thank You for your time MPH!

With Pleasure, Flashorn. I have that same bad habit (even though I really do not think it is a bad habit) of detailing something with pictures instead of words. I work so much better when I can picture a problem instead of just hearing someone else talk about the problem. If you or your daughter need any other help with Office 2007, I would be more than happy to help. (SMax, you got my back?) LOL :D
