I have a Dell Dimension E520 with 2 gig of memory and an Intel 6400 dual core processor. I have never been able to run system restore on this PC unles it is in "Safe Mode". I have had some people tell me that it is because of my Anti Virus Suite which is Norton. I have tried turning off "Auto Protect", but still fails. When I do run it in safe mode it messes up the auto protect ortion of Norton and I have had to reinstall the entire package again to get Norton bact to working.I have had mant frustrating discussions with Dell, even to the point of taking the PC to the Round Rck Office and have a "Senior" Tech work on it(I was having other problems along with this one. If anyone could shed some light on this subject and give me a solution I would be very grateful.
Thanks

Norton (and all things Symantec) is junk. Perhaps Symantec is hinting that you shoud buy 'Ghost' as well? (I am kidding, DO NOT under any circumstance buy Ghost! OK, so maybe I'm still bitter about the demise of PowerQuest.)
Most likely if it is Norton that is the culprit, then uninstalling Norton Antivirus software and then rebooting it will enable 'System Restore' again. It's something to try if you're already 'doomed' to reinstall NAV after your system restore. Of course, it could still be the culprit, and it's 'broken' your System Restore.
Try that, and if it works, then use some other antivirus that won't start nagging you and then 'expire', like AVG Free Edition.
If it doesn't work (and you don't need to restore right now, or have already restored successfully), try disabling and re-enabling 'System Restore'. You will lose all previous restore points, but there's a decent chance that the new ones henceforth will work.
Good luck. There's already a small chance NAV has mucked your computer up, so uninstalling might drop the bomb on the system so it won't boot again. Be sure to make a fresh System Restore 'snapshot' before you do it... assuming that snapshot can be restored.
If you have a full license or recently got your computer with this crapware bundled in it, you might be able to get some free online support from Symantec or your computer manufacturer.

I agree I hate Norton. I take it off every new machine both here in my home office and at work. I don't think Norton is a bad system I just don't like the attitude that they can do no wrong. Their site is most times confusing and not user friendly at all. I run Defender Pro on ALL my machines and never have a problem. Evildave is right I would think that your problem is with Norton. Also if your "page file" is not dumping on shut down then you may be loading too much stuff at one time. If you have enough memory 2 GB or more you should be alright. But if you are running Vista with only 1GB you may be over loading the page file or not have it set right. If you have it set to "LET WINDOWS MANAGE PAGE FILE" then Windows will use everything in site. If this the case you need to get the system back up and set a restore point that you are happy with. But I'm betting on Norton being the problem it has happened before.

Hi Warangel and welcome to PCWorld Communities.
A lot of people on this Forums hate Norton because it is a resource hog and altogether not very effective. I myself had to have an IT friend of mine uninstall it, 3 times and that was AFTER the Geeks at Best Buy had already uninstalled it for me, per my request.
You can get the Norton Uninstall Tool from this link service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 just follow the prompts.

Thank you for the welcome! I control 14 computers at the radio stations I work for and the very first thing I do is kill off Norton. I think everyone is right about the restore not working because of Norton. It takes forever to get the thing out of your system. Thanks for the link! Got it saved!
Now, here is something that might be of use. If System Restore is not working in Vista and Restore points aren't being saved. If you are using a dual boot with XP and Vista that each time you boot into XP the restore points in Vista are deleted. I don't know if this is a problem with the first post but It's a thought.
