I have a faulty 'old' Maxtor hard drive (manufacturer date Feb 2006). I tried to find the online rma procedure on Maxtor.com but I always get redericted to Seagate.com. There I tried to enter the serial and product ID but those number don't have the same format as the Seagate ID's. Where can I find a Maxtor rma (not from Seagate) procedure because my faulty hd might still be in warranty? Regards, Alexander

Hi AlexDemaet and welcome to PCWorld. :-)

I do not believe the manufacturer date is as important as when you purchased the drive and from whom did you purchase the drive. I gather you do not have the paperwork (receipt, warranty, registration, etc.) that came with this drive. Seeing as Seagate took over Maxtor, your only recourse, without any of the aforementioned documentation, may be to take the drive back to where you bought it for an exchange...that is if you are still within the retailer's return policy period.

Other than that, short of contacting Seagate by phone and explaining your situation, I am not certain there is much you can do.

Hey and welcome to Pc World :8} :8}

Maybe seegate has taken over Maxtor? AS like Amd and Ati are togeather maybe it is the same with your Maxtor and Seagate.

Regards Vlad

I bought the hd via an online shop in the uk (I am from Belgium). It's not so easy for me and safe maybe to return it to the UK. I know there was an original online rma service in the past from Maxtor.com. In the past I have successfully started a Maxtor rma procedure (about 4 years ago) and I received a not faulty hd in return. So I really hope such a Maxtor rma service still exists. Thanks, Alexander

Yes it is dangerous sending a hd over to somewhere were you do not really have contact with. But that is a problem buying things over the net as if it gives trouble you could send it, but you have to ask yourself will you get it back?

A lot can change in four years. The only suggestion I have for you is to contact Seagate directly and explain your situation to them. There may be a Maxtor/Seagate RMA procedure that is not detailed on the Seagate website. Here is the link for the Belguim Warranty Support Department

Seagate has indeed absorbed Maxtor, but unlike some others is still manufacturing and marketing Maxtor. When Googling Maxtor.com, I was redirected to here (Seagate/Maxtor) which has the warranty return service you looked for. As a long time Seagate user, last June I had my first occasion to return a drive. It failed after only 2 months in service in my Raid1 NAS, so no data was lost. They acknowledged receipt of the drive and sent me a confirmation of shipment of a replacement drive two days later

You should note that sometimes warranties are "country specific". In your case, it may or may not come into play as both are European countries. It kind of depends on who Maxtor/Seagate operates. The point is that sometime you will run into trouble if your shipping/return address does not match the country from whence you bought the product. You might have to call Maxtor/Seagate.

I have contacted Seagate clicksupport (Seagate email support), I give them my drive details (serial number,...) and they told me my drive was out of warranty.

This is about my 4 th faulty 'old' hd from Maxtor and I am still using 4 Maxtor hd's (2 of them I am using all the time, and the other 2 I use as backup drives).

Of the 4 faulty hd's, I have received 2 replaced RMA hd's. The other 2 were out of date.

I defragment my hd's very often with Diskeeper and I hope my current not faulty drives will have a 'long' life.

I don't use my hd's in my pc case, I use them outside my pc case as external drives (e-Sata).

Thanks for your info!

Hi AlexDemaet. I wish there was more that you could have done to get a replacement hard drive. At least you were able to get in contact with someone from Seagate/Maxtor to confirm the RMA status. Since you have this Discussion marked as "Answered," please select the two (2) posts that you feel were "Helpful" and the post that you feel was "Correct."
