Does anyone have any ideas on a free error fixing software? Something for cleaning up registry errors, invalid file extensions, missing shortcuts, etc.

Thanks

Hi :)
Your question led me to a Google Search and I discovered an application called "Gary Utilities." It includes a whole bunch of different system cleanup options that may do what you want.
What operating system are you running?

Posted Image Hi :

Back on Dec 1 & 2, this forum had a thread about "Glary Utilities/Registry Cleaner" which was started by someone who had a bad experience with them . The Thread is located at forums.pcworld.com/message/75656#75656|m-75656 and I highly Recommend you read my Post of Dec 2 @ 10:24 AM .

You seem to be asking about "registry cleaners" and "associated" programs. For WHAT security-oriented experienced, trained, certified, Volunteer Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals think about "these", read the Info in the Thread at [http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099] .

Spiritwind, bless your heart. :D I think you've got an international archive of documents entitled for every conversation leading towards system recovery somewhere on your neck of the woods. Thanks for keeping me on track.

Actually, I use Glary, and am pleased with it. It's only one tool, though, at least in my case. As the above members ask, more detailing would help. I. as well, as others above DO caution you regarding registry cleaners or defragment-fix utilities. If you aren't sure about delving around your registry, I would not suggest it. It's not for the faint of heart. ;) I DO suggest you backup to a disk before trying anything within registry.
PCW has AusLogic in the d/l section, under registry cleaners. I use AusLogic, and am happy with that, also. Are you really needing registry help, or is it perhaps a malware or spyware situation?

Anyhoo, let us know more specifically what you are trying to take care of, and I'm sure the members can offer better ideas for you.

Thanks for all the replies evryone. Im running XPSP2, not really having any problems, and don't want to mess with the registry at all. I do take the time to keep the system free of clutter and unnecessary stuff, old programs, unused shortcuts, .tmp files, etc. I was, for the most part looking for something to help in my quest to have as uncluttered machine as I can with my limmited knowledge. I am "faint at heart" and don't want to get into the registry. I'm sure there is a bunch of junk in here and would like to find it if I can without getting to involved. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Hey acticsid! I too, have XP SP2, and this is what I do when I want to clean up a little bit of the dust bunnies. I let MS take care of the clean up for me. Meaning that I go directly to Windows Live OneCare. There , you can have your PC cleaned for FREE by Microsoft. Here is the link : onecare.live.com/site/en-ca/default.htm . Once on that page I only use the Clean Option. The one with the broom. Click on that one and the process will start. You will have to accept to install a ActiveX and don't forget to turn off the option for the pop-up window. If there is anything to clean out they will do it safely.

PS> don't forget to use Internet Explorer.

Gave it a try Flash, seems to be exactly what I was after. I was a lil hesitant on the registry clean(I did back it up first), but most of everything listed I recognized as junk, so hopefully that'll make a difference. Thanks again.

Hey arcticsid!! I'm glad you found my advice usefull. When you go to ONELIVE and before it "cleans" anything out, IT (the cleaner) will create a restore point for you. To verify this, take a look at your "system restore" and you should be able to see an entry made by the Windows Live OneCare.

Now, it is one thing to dust off the inside of your PC , you also have to think about How secure you are. I mean that you have to have adequate security AND to use it. A good agenda would be to make sure that your security programs are always up to date, and to Scan at Least once a week. If you keep to a good schedule , your computing experience will be enjoyable

If anything else comes up , you know where to find us

Hey PCWizKid!! Thankx for the link. and Welcome to PCW. But may I make a suggestion? You should POST your link in a new thread. This way It would benefit the whole forum.

On a side note arcticsid's OS is XP SP2. I did see that you had a few resources pertaining to XP but, to be quite frank with you I experimented with most of them and a few others and the ONLY one that I would recommend is Registry Mechanic. This is the only one that I would be inclined to recommend but, ONLY if the user or member was experienced enough to recognize the entries to be "cleaned"

Microsoft Live OneCare on the other hand , will only "clean" the entries that it deems necessary. It is a safer way to go.

I did not look at your tweaks for Vista but, If you post on the main forum , I'm sure you will get more than a few responce's.
