I need some help. When I try to back up anything to a DVD+R like
photos, music, and important documents my E: Drive will not reconize
the DVD. It will reconize CD+R though. I don't know if I need to buy a
software program in order to do this or what. Could someone please give
me some advice on how I can store my imformaton and back up my files.
Other problem I have to is that I can not back up my system using my
back up program for windows XP. What do I do to solve this problem or
am I doing it wrong?

Thank for your help

Hey louist! I don't know if it's the software that's missing or if it's XP that's not configured properly but, let's try the software . This is a free App. that you can download at http://www.cdburnerxp.se/. See if this does the trick . If not, post again.

I know that with the Windows XPbuilt in CD burning software, I'm NOT entirely sure if it will recognize your dvds. I thought it worked only for CDs.

As for the windows backup software, have you noticed how it's always giving you the option of saving your files to a floppy disk instead of a blank CD?

Yes it does say floppy disc on the bottom but I have a laptop and there is now floppy disc drive. Am I supposed to go buy one just for this reason. I thought you could back up your files on to a DVD disc.

For windows xp you cannot use the built in windows program to burn disk thats are DVD. It only reads cd disks. To burn dvd use another software like nero, magiciso. Here are the free ones listed below. For a good paid one you can buy nero but the ones below should do.
* AVS Disc Creator
* CDBurnerXP Pro
* DeepBurner Free Version
* Final Burner Free
* ImgBurn

I believe that Windows XP's built in file transfer software "cd burning" is limited to only a CD.

Thank for your help

Hi, Louist and welcome to PCWorld. You didn't specify what kind of computer you have, is it a Desktop or Laptop.

Also, we would need to have more information about it. Perhaps your computer comes with a CD burner only? If that's the case you would not be able to burn a DVD on it, and that's the reason it does not recognize the DVD. However, I believe you can backup your photos, music and documents to a CD.

Next time you have a question, please be as specific as possible and provide as much information as possible so we can better assist you.

I hace a Hp Pavilion Notebook and it has a cd/DVD burner that it came with. I don't have a problem putting my files on a Cd but I have to have so many because it only holds like 700 MB or something like that. Dvds can hold up to 5 Gs that is why I was wondering.

What's the model number of your HP Pavillion notebook? And have you tried checking the instructions that came with your manual? it should be covered there to some extent.

You can also check this Document on CDs and DVDs forums.pcworld.com/docs/DOC-1404|d-1404 it contains a lot of helpful information about various types of media.

Hi louist. Welcome to the forums. As well as the programs suggested by lilxkid, check out a nice burning program suite called Starburn. You can download the free version from HERE. It will even do Blue-Ray and HD-DVD.

Hey louist!! Your notebook will most likely have CD/DVD+- Double-Layer 4 or 8 times drive and maybe the LightScibe option. Now, IF you use the Free burners that lilx mentioned you can take advantage of the Double Layer burner in your drive and BURN up to 8.4 GB of information on a Double Layer DVD . These Double-Layer DVD's are a little more expensive than regular DVDs but, contain Double the amount of storage on them.

Hi Adama, I like the program. I've had problems in the past with Roxio bloatware causing WMP to crash, and Nero bloatware slowing my system down. Starburn works great for me.
