I have had this laptop for a little over a year, running Vista Home Premium 32 bit. All along I have been able to insert my memory card and the auto play wizard would pop up. About 10 days ago my printer started malfunctioning. Every time I tried to print I would get an error message that the printer could not communicate with the computer. Strange coincidence, my friend suddenly got the same error on her computer/printer. Because of this I did a virus scan and ruled out a virus. I uninstalled the printer software and then reinstalled the software/driver and got the printer back up and running. By chance, I tried to download some pictures from my Scan disk memory card and I couldn't get the computer to read the memory card. I hear the "chime" that the computer realizes something has been inserted into the memory slot but the auto play wizard never pops up. If I go into computer and click on the drive that way I get a message that I need to format. I have gotten into my card this way before without problem. If I reformat I will loose all my pictures so I backed up the memory card and formatted. As predicted I lost all my pictures on the card and it still didn't fix the problem. Too add to my frustration, I have a Flip camcorder that now is malfunctioning too. If I plug the USB arm into any of the USB outlets, again I hear the chime but no auto play pops up. If I go into "computer" I am asked to format the device.
If I take the Flip to another computer, it works fine. Can't say for sure about the memory card as the other laptop is very basic and does not have a memory slot.
I have noticed that immediately after inserting into USB/memory card slot I get the icon in my lower tray "safely remove hardware". This may or may not have always been the case but I don't remember ever noticing that prior to these problems arouse
I CAN plug the printer into the usb and the printer works. When I use the very same USB with the Flip, no luck Very frustrating as I have always been able to simple pop into my usb or memory slot without problem.
I look forward to hearing what suggestions you may have

I beleive that when you place a plug and play a menu comes up to ask you what to do, and there is a box that says that do this every time i connect a device, now if you select that and then select do nothing in the option then every time you connect that usb device it will have it in your my computer but it will not have a pop up menu, has any one been on your computer besides you, that could have done this option?
