For some reason my lavasoft free, I've had for months, since the 7.0 was enacted, Ad-aware fails on the update. I have a older HP, 1g of ram sitting in another room and keep up the AVG anti-virus, the new spyblaster version 4.0 and usually listen to games over the internet. So I uninstalled from the control panel, then went to the lavasoft website and re-downloaded the free version, with everything loading alright. But now it has the old Jan update and still won't update, getting the failed, go to website. Tried that, nada. This version still updates on my laptop, though, with Vista, go figure. Any ideas??

Hey shiprock!! Welcome to PCW.
Now I presume ,since, the new laptop is Vista , the old one must be XP, am I right ?
A few questions here for you. When you uninstalled from the Add/remove, did you then go to your "Programs File" and see if there was anything left in the folder? If there still is a folder for Ad-Aware , Delete it and start over again. Once re-installed , do a reboot.
Around the time you started to have this problem , did you install some new program that might interfere with your security app.?
Have you tried an older version of Ad-Aware ?
One more thing I would like you to verify if you could. Are both your programs for Auto-Update and System Restore working properly.
In Auto-Update you should be able to choose between the different options and in System Restore there should be a restore point for today or yesterday as the most recent one.
I say this because IF you were infected , maleware has a tendency to stop these services.
What other Security Apps. do you have and are you having problems with any other.
Now , my suggestion to you would be to replace the Ad-Aware program with SUPERAntiSpyware, which is more effective at finding maleware and removing it.
You can read about it here, http://www.superantispyware.com/ . This is also a Free app.
Hope this will help.

Flash' thanks for the reply. This is just a backup I'm just keeping updated mostly, and listen to hockey games on the internet. Since I saved the download to my desktop, I'll go as you suggest, and go in program and weed out any and all ad-ware. If that don't work Superspyware here I come. Thanks for the brain jog-Shiprock5209

Hey shiprock!! It's my pleasure! By the way , if your just keeping it updated , you should have received MS' Black Tuesday's up-date. That little yellow shield in you notification area. If it's not there , check the auto-update service.
You are simply swapping a good security app. for a Better one . And since both are free, you are not wasting any resources($).
If there's anything else I'm sure we can somehow help.

Flash' that wouldn't be the Vista update?? My desktop with Vista, Home premium, 2g ram, rebooted around 10am (Arizona time). Then wouldn't you know it my Ad-aware screwed up with Error messages, The Task Manager reported 51 errors in a row. But on a good note, after deleting everything in the program files in the XP computer, I actually downloaded an update. Yes 3 computers, my Laptop wasn't started up today just in case of BLACK TUESDAY. Problem Solved, Thanks again.
