Hello tweak, and welcome to the PC World Community.

I have a few questions for you first of all - what operating system are you running? ie: Windows XPSP2, Windows Vista, etc.

Document Viewer - is this an application that came with the HP install disc?

Are you attempting to view a document that you scanned?

If you scanned the document - what format did you save it in? (Open windows explorer and check the three letter extension on the file name).

The more detail you can give us as to the application, and the process you went through to generate/scan/save the document and what application you used to generate and the application you are now trying to use to view it, the better we can understand your situation.

Also - since the product is only two days old, have you tried HP Technical Support? I not suggesting that you go their now, just whether or not you tried and what their suggestions were.

Thank you rgreen4:)

I'm running XPSP2.

Sorry about the delay in replying, but I wanted to hear what HP had to say so I've sent you their email below.

When I open the solutions centre the document viewer tab shows and I presume it's an application for the HP so that documents can be viewed, whether by scanning or printing. However, having clicked on it, it will not open so I don't know if it works or not. As you can see HP said it's not meant to be part of this particular printer's software, so I'm very confused.

I've tried what they suggested (and will reply to them about that) but when I opened the wizard and then double-clicked the Fix an application, it didn't list the document viewer program.

Anyway, here is what HP had to say:

Hello Judy,
Thank you for contacting HP Customer Care.
I gather from your mail that when opening the HP Document Viewer from the HP Solution Center for the HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One unit you are getting an error message. You have uninstalled and reinstalled the software for the unit.

Judy, we are currently experiencing a high inflow of emails. We usually respond to our customers within an hour. So, we apologize if you receive a delayed response and appreciate your patience. Thank you for your cooperation.

I will definitely assist you regarding the issue and will do my best to provide you with all the information to resolve the issue.

Judy, the HP Document viewer software is not included with the HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One unit software. So the issue might be with the incompatibility of the software. I would recommend performing the steps given below to resolve the issue.

1. Click Start >> Control panel.
2. Double click on Administrative tools.
3. Then double click on "MICROSOFT .NET FRAMEWORK 1.1 WIZARDS SHORTCUT"

A DOT NET WIZARD window will open up.

4. Double click on Fix an application.
5. Search for a file named document viewer and click on OK. Then select APPLICATION - SAFE MODE and click on APPLY.

Also, please provide me with the information if you have installed any other HP software on the computer.
If you need further assistance, please reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.
You may receive an e-mail survey regarding your e-mail support experience. We would appreciate your feedback.
Sincerely,
Anne

Tweak - the e-mail from HP answers my question about document viewer - I believe some other application has placed it there.
Below is a snip of the Solution Center as installed by the HP 6180 AIO software on Vista:

Flipping over to my older HP D530 with XP Pro, I did find a solution Center with a Document Viewer button with HP Photosmart 8200 series at the top. This was a printer I had installed on that PC until I got my 6180 AIO. (They use the same ink cartridges and the same duplex adapter).

Did you have a previous printer installed on this machine that is not longer installed and the new software may not have fully installed?

If so, I would turn off the machine, unplug the printer, restart and then using the Add/Remove software delete all instances of solution centers, then go to the printer folder, click on the printer and delete it. You will also have to delete the fax (HP AIO printers show up in the printer folder as a printer and as a fax).

The solution center software with the current AIO's is version 8, the version supplied in 2005 and 6 was version 7. On my XP machine, it is shown as Version 7 last used on 1/10/2006. This machine does not have my Photosmart C6180 AIO installed (yet).

Now that I have my D530 back on the network, here is a snip from my screen shot on the older Solution Center:

The document viewer will open .doc and .pdf files, but then so does word and Adobe Reader.

Thanks for all your good advice rgreen4:)

Yes, I did have a previous printer on and I remember not deleting everything from that one, so I will do that. I now believe that's what's causing all my problems so thanks for pointing it out.

Also, what do you think of this advice? At least it might help someone else, too.

It's from this site:

http://www.shopping..../shopping/storeaccess.do?templatetype=productdetail&productcode=CC567A%23ABA&jumpid=ocR1002USENC-001_HP%20Photosmart%20C7280%20All-in-One&lang=en&cc=us

"HP C7280 is an EXCELLENT Printer, March 1, 2008 CD enclosed is bad-use the web site for software
Received this new HP C7280 3 days ago and absolutely love the print quality and features. The software load is absolutely embarrasing (VERY BAD). The CD that came with the printer failed on numerous attempts during the loading printer software sequence (after loading the drivers). I tried various "methods" including both USB and network all to no avail. Finally after 4 hrs, I tried the website software version (9.01) and it loaded the first time without issues. The CD disk that came with the printer was marked with version 9.02 which I assumed was more recent than the website's Jan update (9.01). BAD ASSUMPTION, so trash the disk and use the HP website for latest software.
I discovered several new options with the printer including "school paper print", which allows one button printing blank lined paper, graph paper, music paper-great for kids. Also the printer allows you to connect by either USB or network (ethernet or wireless). I have both connections installed (at the same time-and it works great!)since the USB is very fast (less than 2 sec to start print), whereas the network is slow (10sec to start print), it allows others on your home router to access the printer. Also the network option allows you access the printer directly via IP address and to change more options and get status, which is quicker that the HP software.
I followed the below recommendation of someone else in this forum and installed those software options listed EXCEPT I ended up adding OCR later. I ended up installing OCR as you need this in order to have the option to scan to a pdf file. Also, turn off your firewall and also your virus checker during the install.
Unzip the download and run. then... 1. Choose the custom (not the "easy" recommended) installation option. 2. Choose "NO" on the next pages which asks if you want to do auto updates. Anytime you select this for any product you now have another application running in the background all the time polling the internet. It will slow your computer down. 3. On the next screen select "custom". Don't be afraid, ever if you're not an "advance user" as it recommends. 4. You get a screen with a bunch of options to install. The first one you have to select, the drivers. Then uncheck "shop for HP" , "HP Updater" (memory & bandwidth eater), "customer participation program" (memory & bandwidith eater), "smart web printing" (you can try it, but more resident sw to eat up cpu and memory), "HP photosmart essentials" (not essential ) ,it'll save you 40MB not to install), "OCR" (unless you really use OCR or need to save to pdf.) OVERALL-I am very pleased with the purchase. .
The photo quality equals prints from any photo service and the text print is great also (not as good as a laser), but certainly good enough for home use (photos are much better than my deskjet 995 and the text print equals the deskjet in quality but is 2x the speed in fast draft, about the same in quality print mode). Many of the other complaints regarding slow response, high use of ink, bad print quality, jamming, just do not exist with my printer. I got the FAX to work, but it is touchy if one of your house phones has an answering machine (true for most of us), as the HP sometimes does not pickup the fax tone if the answer machine message is slow or noisy.
Also loaded OCR (so I could save to pdf) and tried it. Using the option to scan to MS word, it was simple and accurate. Much better than my old version that came with my other HP scanner. I converted 1 full page of text and had only one error and it kept the formatting. No need to buy another OCR program" Written By: donaldm823
