Whenever I receive an e-mail with an adobe reader attachment, the attachment, whether 1 page or 20 pages, opens up almost immediately but then my computer locks up for as long as 2 hours. Nothing I do unl;ocks it. I have removed the adobe from my computer and re-installed 3 different versions -Adobe 6, 7 and 8. All with the same results. Has anyone had similar results or have a suggestion to fix this problem?

Stop using and/or having Adobe Reader on your computer ; it is increasingly under attack from the
Makers of "malware" ; I completely removed my Adobe Reader several months ago and got the
FREE and "slimmer" "Foxit Reader" with Info at www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php .

Hi Shimmy and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D
Before you jump ship on Adobe, please answer some questions:
- Are you using an email client like Outlook, Outlook Express, or Windows Mail?
- If not, what browser are you using to access your email?
- What is the manufacturer and model number of your computer?
- What is the current specifications of your computer? (If you are not sure how to find this information, Right Click on My Computer and select Properties )

Thank for your suggestion. I am a free lance consultant and my clients are national and multinational. My instructions and report forms are sent to me by using a variety of programs such as adobe, Microsoft words, etc. so I have to have adobe. I cannot tell my clients that I am having trouble with adobe and they should change. They will tell me to get it fix or they will find someone else to do the work for them.

I am using MSN/DSL for my internet. I have a Compaq Presario computer with 104 GB total and 87.9 GB available.and Windows XP
My previous computer was an HP basic model with Windows ME. The Adobe worked fine and I only replaced it because the internet froze and it would have cost me as much to repair it as it did for a new computer.

Hi Shimmy. Okay, I may not have been clear in my questions so let's try again:
- How do you access your email? Do you go to a specific webpage or do you use something like Microsoft Outlook, or Outlook Express?
- Your computer may have low resources and that may be the reason it locks up. Please Right Click on My Computer and select Properties. When the new window comes up, please provide the information at the bottom of that window; similar to this screen shot:
!untitled.bmp!
Based on this information, you may need to increase your resources (primarily memory). Do you know the model number of your computer? We can use this to make suggestions on possible resource upgrades.

Hi Shimmy. Well, I tried the best I could to find your computer based on the information provided. Let's try it this way:
You stated that you have a Compaq Presario computer. Do you have a laptop or a desktop?
- If you have a laptop, there should be a sticker on the bottom of the laptop that will show you the model number. The information should be listed in a section that says, "Model Number." Please note, do not post the serial number of the computer OR the product key listed on your Windows Certificate of Authenticity.
- If you have a desktop, the model number should be imprinted somewhere on the front of the computer itself.
If you still have problems finding the model number, you can download a free PC Audit utility called Belarc Advisor which is available here:
http://www.belarc.co...e_download.html
When you install and run this application, the model number of the computer will be listed.
As for the emails, the Adobe messages are not as important as the way you access the emails. The reason I am asking about the way you access your emails is because you may need to update either the browser that you use or the email client that you use. Please tell us exactly how you access an email when someone sends it to you.

I want to thank all the people who answered my e-mail and sent replies trying to help me. I have found the way to stop this problem in the May issue of PC World. In an article entitled 101 freebies was information on how to circumvent the Adobe problem. By logging onto Find.PCWorld.com/60112 I was able to download FoxIt Reader which will read Adobe, Microsoft Word, etc. with no problem. Again, thank you for your help.
