My documents folder will not stay open whenever I click on it

Good Morning;
I'm having a problem with my documents folder in Windows Xp. For some unknown reason whenever I try to open it up I get the following error message:
AppName:explorer.exe AppVer:6.0.2900.3156
ModName:1epsps.dll ModVer:1.0.0.1
Offset:00015bd6

cDocume ~1donnalocals~1Tempebb0_appcompat.txt
There is more but I can't get it copied as the box only stays open for a few seconds then closes again. I've had this error since before Christmas and it's basically driving me nuts.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as there are personal documents, pictures and the like that are in that folder that I would love to get access to.

Note that the My Document folder is basically just a "link" to a folder buried on the hard drive. Thus, until we can figure out why it is not working, you still should be able to get to the folder by other means. Open up My Computer. Double click the C: drive. Double-click the "Documents and Settings" folder. Find the folder with your user name/user ID on it (say your account that you use on the computer is "Logan"...there should be a folder called "Logan") and double-click it to open it. There should now be a My Documents folder listed. If you double-click it and open it, it should be your My Documents folder. If you want quick access to it in the future while we try to figure out the problem, then go back one level (i.e. go back to the user folder that shows the My Documents folder in the list) and then right-click the folder, but DO NOT release the right mouse button and while holding the right mouse button down, drag the My Documents folder to your desktop and then release the button. A menu will pop up offering to Move it there, Copy it there, or Make a shortcut there. Choose the Make a Shortcut there option and you will have a short cut to the buried My Documents folder on the desktop...next time you want to go to the My Documents folder, just double click that shortcut and you will be there (note this shortcut is rather similar to how the "official" Windoze My Documents function works, but is not quite as "advanced").

Microsoft VisualCRuntime Library





Runtime Error


Program C:WindowsExplorer.exe


This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusal
way


Please contact the application support team for more information





Is it possible that I'm going to have to re-install or repair Windows to get rid of this error?

I was afraid it might be something wrong with Explorer.exe instead of just something with the My Documents functionality. I am assuming you get this message when you try to double-click My Computer. Is that correct? Next thing to try is right-click on the Start Menu and select "Explore" from the options that are in the pop-up menu. Does that get you the same message?






If you are getting the same error message for all of those situations, then that kind of suggests Explorer (it is the "program" that Windoze uses to navigate through the file structure) is somehow corrupted. If so, then likely you will either have to try to repair Windoze...or if that does not work, reinstall Windoze.

Hi, smax013, Nope I only get it when I try to get into my documents folder. I'm looking for my cd now with Windows Xp on it but it's on a cd that's amongst over 110 that I have to go through. But once I find it I'm going to try and repair Windows. Barring that not working I will be reformatting and re-installing Windows from scratch.

So the error message comes up when you do that final step to actually go into the My Documents folder that is buried in the C: drive? If so, that is interesting. Navigating everywhere else around the C: drive works fine, correct?






Is your user account an administrator account?






Something else to try is to create a new user account...make it an administrator accound...and then see if you can get into that folder. Maybe the "permissions" for that user or other functions of that user account are screwed up. If that works, then you can copy those files to the new user account and eventually delete the screwed up user account. If it does not work, then it might be time to try the repair or reinstall.

Nope, I've got an administrator account and any time I click anywhere else to open something up it works perfectly. I'll give your suggestion a shot and see what happens, cause it could very well be that that account is faulty as you say.

okay...I was having the same problem, so I did open a new account on my computer, gave it administrator rights. I went back to my original account and moved my folder from the desktop where I moved it before over to the shared documents folder the same way I moved it before by right clicking and holding down the button while I moved it. Return to your new account and you will be able to open the folder........hopefully.
