Save DOS: The Ultimate Antidote to Vista's Bloat

Sure, the OS holy wars have always been in a 'take no prisoners' mindset. However, I think MS is culpable insofaras its primary goal does not appear to be the advancement or satisfaction of the end user. It's corporate-centric view got the best of it. It won't even be an eventual success story because there are no inherent advances over XP. Frankly, they were trying to translate public fears over security into a more
locked down computing model. It's not the first time they've tried something like this. Compared head-to-head, XP would win.
Microsoft is a big boy, and frankly I don't mind seeing it get knocked back a peg or two. The growth of competing operating systems can only serve to keep MS honest, and drive innovation. Speaking as a primarily XP user (who has also used Unix, SGI, Amiga, Mac and Linux OS's), I have to concede that OSX really is a better OS than Vista, if for no other reason than they moved to small, tried and true, unix kernel, and then built a kick-ass user interface on top of that. It had major problems during its initial release too, but the eventual benefits were obvious from the start. I don't see the eventual benefits to Vista; nobody does.
I'm curious about System 7 though.

The days of, 'dir /p', and 'cd..' will never go away. It is the foundation on which file structure was built. DOS was more of a father to me than my REAL father. Even if we tried to expunge DOS, I believe it would fight back with an immense amount of rage; the likes of which we have never seen before. Skys will fall, seas will boil, and grass will not grow. Heck, isn't DOS an acronym for something? :)

I have used and relied on all versions of DOS since 1.0 in my work supporting and repairing computer hardware. The latest stand-alone version is now limited in native support of large storage devices but still does everything else better than ANY Windows app or diagnostic I ever found!
Without regard to this subject being an April fools joke, or not, DOS was and is useful, GREAT and could remain so if---Bill gives us an UPGRADE!!!
And with general reference to WINDOWS and GUI's, our ancestors required 1000's of years to progress from crude pictures to letters for communicating, in less than 5 to 10 years, Gates nearly destroyed that evolution!

The abuse occured with the upgrade from Win-2000 to Xp. Vista is just "evolution" from that point! So yes, I would really like to see a new, complete DOS issued by Micro$oft.

Doesn't matter when the "abuse" happened...you sure you want the company that seems inclined to do those type of upgrades to upgrade DOS? After all, if Micro$oft was inclined to "butcher" Windoze when going from Win 2000 to XP (or when ever), why would you believe that they would not butcher an upgrade to DOS these days? This is the company that believes that have to include everything but maybe the kitchen sink in their OS these days! What makes you think they would not do that same to DOS? My point is be VERY careful what you wish for!

I agree with smax.
Its also often true for most software in general, thats why I hang on to old versions.

You really sure you want an upgrade? After all, look at what Micro$oft did when they upgraded Windoze XP to Vista! !http://forums.pcworld.com/legacyimages/

Happy April Fool's Day. Phew. I was about to dig out my Rubik's Cube and my Michael Jackson Thriller album.
The thing is, that in a way I DO miss DOS - or at least, I miss those late nights writing stories on my PC|XT (which I bought for $2200, but which lasted me 6 years), using WordPerfect. I kept the lights off because I loved the way those glowing amber letters seemed to hang in mid-air against the dark. Or maybe I just miss the 80's.

I think I understood your point with the first post. Face it, unfortunately there is not enough market for a DOS from a competative provider so if there is ever to be an upgrade to DOS then it will come from Microsoft. A very few others did try in past years but never succeeded in providing all the usefulness of MS-DOS. Right, Bill and his overpaid troups tend strongly to "Do it my way" even when existing evidence indicates that way is wrong. The company apparantly sees itself as the only viable leader of the industry, with customers who are presumably idiots, and as result, whatever they want to do is obviously the right, honorable and educational thing to do! (Attitude sells all).
Any new DOS issued by Microsoft would only accomodate Microsofts objectives (mostly > $$) and results otherwise could expect to be seriously crippled, still I will take whatever I can get and hope for better---sometime---somewhere, which is where I am now. As regards including everything with an OS, this does not bother me at all---provided other parts of the OS actually does what I want, i.e., run competing programs reliably and with minimum hassle.
