I think you are giving up way too easily. If you have decided to return the video card, get another video card that is comparable to the 8500GT. I am not one to provide suggestions on video cards so if you decide to follow this suggestion, I am sure there are other forum members that will provide suggestions.

I am still not convinced this is an onboard video card versus the expansion video card. I honestly think the card itself (both of them apprarently) may be bad. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hey, Most likely scenario is a bad card. If you want to replace it, I would go to an 8600GT for the gaming aspects. The 256 Mb version is under $100. The 512 Mb is about $120 due to the extra memory. The 8400 is not a gaming card as I found out and was an expensive lesson for not doing my homework first. A very remote possibility would be a problem with the OS itself. You could try a restore back as far as you can and see if that helps. The reason I bring this up, is that in an earlier post, you said you had problems with the CD. I have an evga 8600GT in here and didn't have any problems on my initial driver install. On my last install, I installed from their site due to some updates that had come out. coastie65

this thread was marked as answered from the beginning . i never looked into it. After reading through 3 pages , i have some things to add.

The onboard video should have no problems with the 8500gt. You cant disable it from the bios, there is no such setting. If you dont want to use it just dont install the drivers that came with the chipset installation CD but it will leave you with 0 mb graphics memory.(you certainly will not want to do that).

I was really shocked to see the reply from the nVIDIA forum. I m running an 8600GT on a G33 chipset without any problems. You dont need to disable anything , just install the nvidia drivers and it will do all things on its own. Or try by uninstalling the intel graphics driver and just install nvidia one.It will use both memories. But it wont make any difference but its worth a try.

The error regarding the nvidia driver installation that you are getting shows that no nvidia product is detected, so it is most likely that card is faulty or the PCIe X16 slot.

Since you got another card and same errors, most probably the slot is not functioning properly.

No I havn't tested it on another computer because as I mentioned before, I turened an old one in and I got a new one because we thought the old one was bad so the possiblitly that the card is bad is rare.

I dont know if the PCI-E X16 slot is bad, is there a way to test it?

If this is the second card you have tried (I did not recall that, but that just might be me having a "senior moment"), then that tends to be an indication that maybe it might be a bad PCI-E slot. It still could just be a bad second card, but the odds of it being a bad card drop quite a bit if it the second card to be tried.

As [~44270] suggested, the only way YOU can test if the slot is bad is to put in a card that you KNOW works (which is why I asked if you had tried the card on another computer...if it works on another computer, then you know it is NOT the card and is most likely the slot). The only other way is to take the computer to be serviced by a tech that can do hardware diagnostics.
