Hello,

I can not add favorites to Internet Explorer. When I try, a box pop up stating that the action has been canceled due to restriction place on this computer, please contact system administrator. For one: I am the only owner of the computer, and two: I signed on as administrator. I uninstalled explorer and install a new copy. The problem is still there. I looked in the dir. and the bookmarks are there. How can I get them to show up and stop having that box from showing up. :(

Hi MrsChilbe and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

We need a bit more information:

"I looked in the dir. and the bookmarks are there."

Do you mean that you checked in Windows Explorer to confirm the Favorites or you just clicked on Favorites within Internet Explorer?

Additionally:

- What security applications do you have and what were the results of the latest scans?

- What version of Internet Explorer are you using?

- Do you have any other browser and if so, do you get the same issue within those browsers as well?

- Have you tried to create a Test User Account to see if the same issue arises within the new User Account?

Hello mphenterprises,

I check the dir. with the window explorer. I created a temp account and had the same results. I have used Netscape 9.0 and have no problem with the bookmarks. I am running XP system and Internet Explorer is 7.05. I have Mc Afee security Center . It finds no problem. I ran spy-bot and windows defender daily and it has found no major problem.

Okay, the fact that you can access the same favorites (presumably) within Netscape tells me that there is something blocking your access through Internet Explorer that your other security applications are not catching.

As a test, please completely disable McAfee and download the following applications:

- SuperAntiSpyware

- AVG Anti-Spyware

- CCleaner (Temporary Internet File, Cache, and Cookie Cleaner)

One question I did not ask was for how long has this been occurring. If this is a relative new issue, a System Restore would return your computer to a date before this issue occurred. You would have to reinstall any applications you installed since the date you choose but this issue would be reversed.

Please try the scans first. If they do not work, then try the System Restore, if applicable.

Hello, I remove McAfee (it is hard to disable) and installed the programs. I ran them and came up with 1 item, spysheriff. Remove the problem. Re-install McAfee and the problem is still there. The problem has been here from the time that I purchase the computer, year ago. (It did not matter at first because I had Netscape, now Netscape is no more.)

1. check your 'secutity settings' settings in IE, look for BHO restrictions.

2. check--McAfee Security Center>computer & files>configure>systemguard protection>advanced>dropddown menu>Browser SystemGuards>IE restrictions (for all it's bells and whistles-McAfee only restricts IE, not other browsers)

3. alternative browser 'Firefox' is (in my opinion) a superior browser--you might try it...

Okay, this statement is very ambiguous. Do you mean that, after uninstalling McAfee (which is not exactly what I meant when suggested disabling McAfee) resulted in the presence of SpySheriff. You then removed SpySheriff and the reinstalled McAfee. After which, the issue with Internet Explorer was still present. Is this correct?

- Did you, at any time, confirm that your issue with Internet Explorer was resolved before you reinstalled McAfee?

I agree with TMan. McAfee is more bark than bite. Also Mozilla Firefox is a better browser than Internet Explorer. Additionally, if you ever decide that you want to completely uninstall McAfee again, you will need the McAfee Removal Tool which is accessible by click this url:
