About a year and a half a ago or maybe two there was an article in PCW magazine about hybrid hard drives for laptops. According to the article only windows Vista was able to take advantage of the technology. It boosted better battery life (I think up to 20%) and less read and write to the hard drive. Anyway I am now looking to buy a new laptop and was looking for that feature, but I am unable to find any information at stores that sell laptop computers. So what ever happened to hybrid hard drives? Is it now the normal in all laptops? Or was it a big flop? since only Vista was able to benefit from it. I would like to hear from someone who knows anything more about this and what happened to it.

It often takes a while for a new technology to be adopted. Occasionally, NEVER. For instance, since solid state drives are coming into prevalence, it's unlikely for a mechanical drive with extra features to have a long and bright future.

So perhaps study solid state drives more carefully.

a large # of gigs in flash memory is quite expensive. In a few years, the protype hybrids may make it into laptop production. Maybe if you google some, you might find an oem distributer of hybrids. Mind that it will be a little pricey.
