I completely agree. I loved my Sony Soundabout WA-33, which I bought in 1983 for around $60 new at an electronics discount shop. This handsome looking, sturdy though plastic-body model had FM-AM radio, metal/CrO2 equalization for cassette recordings, a stereo headphone jack, a mono speaker, a record mute button, AMS, DC in, and a stereo microphone jack. I often used it record meetings and interviews and to grab FM stereo and AM recordings from the on-board tuner, plus of course play pre-recorded and home-recorded audio tapes. It usually also served as my all-purpose portable radio. All the WA-33 lacked in terms of '80s technology was Dolby noise reduction and a audio level meter although the automatic recording volume level worked fairly well. I still have it; the tuning knob (analog vernier type) is cracked and, like your Walkman, the drive belts are old and thus slip badly. It gave me many years of reliable service. That was when Sony knew what it was doing, a trait that began to fade in the early '90s.

I remeber having a walkman when I wan 10 yrs. old. back then, I thought I was cool but know its like just a part of my past. For you people that need the hottest, newest gear – and for no empirical, logical, intelligent, or rational reason at all! – keep an eye out for the PS3 Slim. The PS3 Slim is a smaller, but equally powerful, version of the wildly popular Sony Playstation 3, except it's 1/3 the size, and uses over 1/3 less power. It comes with a 120 GB hard drive, and is fully compatible with Blu-Ray and HD DVDs. Many will get installment loans for it. The good news is that when it debuts this holiday season, it's only going to retail for $299. The PS3 Slim for less than most short term loans – sounds like a good deal.
