Cool column, I just wish it had come last week. I was researching voice recorders this week and would have taken a look at this Sony model had I known about it (I already saw the ICD-UX80 and -UX70). As it was I picked up a Roland EDIROL R-09 to try.

James. Did you try Sony's highest pricest voice recorder, the ICD-BM1A? I there any reason to think that it might be better for speech-to-text conversion than the ICD-MX20? I'm not terribly happy with my ICD-SX46 even with months of training. Therefore, I'm planning to upgrade ASAP. Thanks.

The Sony recoder seems great, but I was looking for a digital recorder that would work in a classroom environment. One that would record the lectures and then be able to convert from speeach to text like the Sony without the limitations of learning once specific voice or at least with more flexibility and accuracy.
Is there such a recorder available?
