Hey Everyone!!

OK, I might have been away for a little while but, I was still looking in.

Now, this morning , when AVG up-dated it's definitions, I was also prompted to up-grade to AVG 8.0.

This was a surprise because, I new that AVG came out with a new version of it's commercial

AntiVirus.

I declined the offer to up-grade thinking that AVG was asking me to buy the up-grade because

they also happened to mention that 7.5 would not be supported after MAY 31st.

I decided to investigate a little further and found out that AVG 8.0 will now be offered as a Free

up-grade.

They will now include the AntiSpyware in the up-grade.

If you don't know about all this check it out at AVG FREE .

And also , here is the download page for the new version NewAVGFree .

My question then, would be , Did anyone already know about this change?

And if you did , you did not inform all of us?

OK, I know we're all busy but, this is a big change because adding AntiSpyware

to the mix might make things a little more difficult for other AntiSpyware apps.

to play nice.

So, has anyone up-graded and if so , are you or did you experience any conflicts?

If you did, which of the apps. did not enjoy having AVG's AntiSpyware around?

Everybody's comments are always appreciated.

Especially your experiences. LOL!

hi [~60096]
Thanx for the update. But the update is a disappointment for me and also for some others also.

As far as you above question is concerned, ya i knew about the update . Though i didnt informed about it , but i had made a reference to it one of my posts. You might have missed [this|m-110246] thread as you werent here. The 9th post is mine and if you read the entire post you will come to know the bad thing about the update.

If the date 31st May 2008 that you have quoted here is correct , then i ll have to dump avg anti-spyware after that.

Hi flashorn, I guess that's what I get for not paying attention when My new definitions are updated. I have 7.5 at present, but guess I'll update. Thanks for the heads up. coastie

I saw the reference, but didn't worry about it. I am in the process of changing all my machines over to Avast, and the next time I boot my old XP laptop it will be converted and then all of my machines will be on Avast Anti-Virus and Superantispyware anti-spyware. AVG has been good, but I just like the way Avast is structured and updates a little better.

Hey rg, I just updated to avg 8.0 and I think it is going to be a pain. As soon as I clicked to reply to this, a bubble popped up alerting me to a cookie. Guess i'll move to avast for AV and look for some redundancy for Webroot spysweeper. I don't know if I can run Superantispyware as a redundant app ( non active) or not. coastie

Hey coastie!!

Yes , you can have SUPERAntispyware as a "on demand" scanner. You just have to go in the "Preferences" ask it to not start

at boot time.

I have bought SUPERAntiSpyware but, still have it as a "on demand" scanner.

I also have unchecked it in MSCONFIG. I does not start when I boot-up.

So, if I understand you correctly, you did the up-grade and now AVG seems to be more

sensitive to everything?

Would it be the AntiVirus part or the AntiSpyware part?

Are they integrated in one app. or can you stop the start-up of either one?

I was thinking , IF AVG doesn't play well this time around, of trying out AntiVir.

I will have to investigate further but, this might turn out to be a good alternative

What do you Think?/?

avast>avg because avast has shown to have better protection.

Thanks lil, I am pretty sure that I'll be going to Avast. I liked AVG, but seeing as how they won't be supporting 7.5 shortly and I am not overly enthusiastic about 8.0, guess I'll switch. coastie

i like to go with antivirus thats doesnt slow anything down at all, has good realtime protection and can have high rate detection. Even though avast had some false detection its better to be safe than sorry... i have avg on my old thinkpad laptop, and what i like about it is easier interface to use compared to avast, but the scanning really never picked anything up. And from what i read avg has slow scans plus sometimes a bit slowdowns for pro version

Hi lil, I just installed the Avast free home version, so I'll see how that goes. I also installed SUPERantispyware as a back up. The home version gives me what I want AV, Trojans and sort of thing. I am pretty well covered for spyware, hijackers, keyloggers, and such, so we'll see how this goes. coastie

I have been using Avast and Superantispyware for some time now, principally on the recommendation of SpiritWind. Considering the source, I installed them shorting after installing Vista on my Media Center a year ago. I have not regretted that decision and have found Avast much less intrusive than AVG. It does the update in the background, and on Vista has a small popup that pops up over the clock in the lower right corner and a voice announces that the Virus Database has been updated. When I installed it on the first of my XP machines, the popup was still there, but no voice announcement.
I also had Webroot sypsweeper on both XP machines, and was waiting on the expiration, blew one away this past weekend, and the other won't survive until this coming weekend. By weekend I will be 100% Avast and Superantispyware. Principally because they are less intrusive than the others, and yet are still highly rated.

Hi rg, I haven't found webroot to be all that intrusive, except there are times when I'm downloading and that BHO thing comes up. That does tend to get a bit annoying. I was free with msn premium, so I use it. But I installed SUPERantispyware for some redundancy. Avast seems to be OK. I liked AVG 7.5, but I don't care much for 8.0 as it includes the antispyware, that you can't make passive and it doesn't have the shields that webroot has. coastie65

This past weekend I noticed that AVG had a little "ad" in the corner for AVG 8.0 (weekends are my PC cleaning days). I just ignored it, assuming that they would charge me for it. After reading this thread, it appears it is free after all. One question I do have; do you have to use the AVG antispyware to use AVG 8.0? If possible, I'd like to upgrade without getting their antispyware thrown in my face. I already use SuperAntiSpyware (switched from Ad-Aware after it got bloaty), and it works fine for me.

I've used AVG for a long time, and never had a problem with it. If I have to use their antispyware however, I guess I'll just switch to Avast like many others. i always hear good things about it, but I've never gotten around to trying it.

Hey kilme!!

Well, I guess you're going to be disappointed because, you can't use one with ought the other.

So, by the 31st of this month AVG 7.5 will no longer be up-dated. You will have to up-grade to 8.0

With their AntiSpyware combined.

You will have to decide if you are going to stick with AVG or dump it and go with another AntiVirus

program.

I will investigate further the AntiVir program to see if it does a better job.

Hope this answers your question.

Hey Piyush!!

I guess we will ALL be stuck the same way come May 31st.

I too , do not want a "double" protection program.

My layered protection is fine just the way it is ( was ).

Now, I will try some of the other AntiVirus offered by different companies.

Are you going to stay with AVG or will you be looking elsewhere?/?

hi flash
Avg anti-spy updated fine today. If it stops after 31st as per plan, i will uninstall it. Avast is currently doing fine as anti-virus in realtime with free version of super-antispy. If avg antispy is removed , then i will try to get any other anti-spy in its place.

I havent yet updated to sp3 , as i m a bit busy coz of exams. Will look for a replacement for avg only after that. I think most people who were using avg anti-spyware only and not their anti-spyware will remove avg fully.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. Looks like it's Avast for me. I do like the name Avast though; makes me think of pirates!

Hi kilme, Yeah, I had AVG 7.5, but because 8.0 had the antispyware app that you couldn't turn off, I switched to Avast and added SUPERantispyware as a back up to my Webroot antispyware app. coastie

I had the paid 7.5 and upgraded to the 8.0. They sent me a updated new Lic. number and so I did this three weeks ago. I scheduled all the updates and are successfull daily. Now the 7.5 usually would find some benign cookie or some tracking cookie and stick it in the virus vault and/or delete one or two files. But this new 8.0 for three weeks now has found nothing. No spyware, malware no virus which make me glad, but suspicious. Nothing? I get warnings in the scan logs, but the virus vault has been empty since day one, with over 1,297,000 'tested objects' What are these? My harddrive is only 45.6 G full. I also have AdAware 7.0 and Spywareblaster 4.0. Maybe I'm squeaky clean, I use the AVG firewall, anti-root kit web shield, resident shield, blah, blah blah. If it would find something, I might even be happy, but I'm running good, fast and the AVG really runs in the background, after you o.k. all the firewall permissions. By the way I e-mailed them to complain about how happy I was :)

Hey coastie!!

When you uninstalled AVG AntiVirus 7.5 , did you need a Uninstall Tool from them or

can I just use REVO to uninstall AVG.

I already uninstalled AVG AntiSpyware with REVO and

used the Hunter mode to eradicate all of AVG.

I will try out AntiVir 's Avira for a while

it seems that they have a very good reputation.

If I don't like this one well, I will most likely buy Nod32

for a one year subsciption and test this one out.
