So it is, So it is.

MCE explains the Voice. MCE is almost Vista anyway.

Fact.
Check out the rounded corners on the windows, the transparent frame when you move a window.
Does still have the XP Kernel though - that should comfort you.

Hey rgreen!!

Thanks for the info. that's what I wanted to see.

The total usage for Avast is pretty small but, the SUPERAntiSpyware

is quite large . I guess you have it starting on boot-up?

I don't have SUPERAntiSpyware on boot time but I do have Asquared and compared to SAS.

it doesn't take any resources at all. Here take a look. You will also notice that AVG is almost

69 megs ,which I think is WAY to much.

OK, well I can't get a clear image so I'll post them manually:

Asqared service.exe................................................3892 Ko

avgemc.exe..............................................................1656 Ko

avgrsx.exe............................................................... 51192Ko

avgtray.exe..............................................................5852 Ko

avgwdsvc.exe...........................................................10652 Ko

As you can see I have been registering an average of 70 megs of ram

for ONE app. this is unreal. I will most certainly get rid of this HOG.

And we keep telling people not to use Norton or McAfee for this very reason.

AVG has really dropped the ball this time.

I did see on Avast that you only get the voice in XP. I might be mistaken.

Chalk it up to old age LOL!

Anyways , Thank You for the info. rgreen.

While the satellite connection was out (heavy overcast), I switched over to and updated my Vista SP1 drive. This is the one the youth at our regional gathering had been playing around with and had gotten it out of sync. I had been working on it and all I had left was to fix the networking. They had changed the group name back to WORKGROUP so it would talk to their laptops. Of course they didn't tell me and when I got home it wouldn't talk to my network.

Interesting the usage figures are closer to but still less than the XP numbers.

The Avast! usage is 1,924K and the SuperAntispyware usage is 32,136K. The total memory usage with Firefox active is 35% (55MB). The system panel now shows the full 4.00GB of memory, but that may just be the actual, not the effective memory.

The reason the Voice sounds off in Coastie's machine is that he is running XP Media Center Edition 2005. I call it Vista Lite as it has some of the GUI enhancements of Vista (rounded window corners, window frame becomes transparent when you move the window, and better support for Wide monitors). He likes to point out that it still says XP on boot.

Hey rg, Actually, I can change the transparency so it doesn't look so much like Vi$ta :D . It does support this 19" WS monitor nicely though. Still haven't made the move to SP3 yet. coastie

Hi I am the user of AVG 7.5 for more than one year. I am very satisfy with this free AV. Recently there is a new version of AVG 8.0 and seems that the update for AVG 7.5 will end until this 31st of May. Therefore I have to upgrade for the new version of AVG. I am very impressive when I know that the new AVG will combine AV and antispyware. But after installing I am really bit disappointed because it will slow down my computer and must connected to internet after startup windows. If you don't connect to the internet the icon will show inactive with exclamation mark. Maybe I will consider to use others AV so any any good suggestion? Thanks.

Hi Parker. It's trying to connect to the internet so that it can automatically update itself. That is not a new feature. AVG 7.5 did the same thing. In order for the application to stay current, it has to download the latest definitions. In order to download the latest definitions, it must have access to the internet.

In the previous version of AVG (7.5) if the definitions were outdated, one would see a grayed out box in the System Tray. Now, in the latest version (8.0), instead of a grayed out box, there is an exclamation point.

If that is not a sufficient enough answer for you and you still want to find alternative to AVG, please open a new Discussion. This Discussion id related solely to the upgrade from AVG 7.5 to 8.0.

Hi MPH, I know that in the AVG 7.5, it will showed a grayed out box in the system tray but at least we can avoid this happening by disable the auto update and choose manual update. Then I didn't see any manual update in the new AVG 8.0 and it just have specific time update and autoupdate. So it must have internet connection when the windows startup to avoid exclamation point showup.

That is not the case. Please take a close look at this snippet. (Click on the image to enlarge it.)

Under Task Settings, you can either enable or disable the Program Update Schedule. If you place a check mark in the box, the feature will be enabled so that the application will update itself automatically. If you take the check mark out of the box, the feature is disabled.

You can get to this option under Tools -> Advanced Settings -> Click the (+) next to Schedules to expand the section. From there you can enable or disable scheduled scans, virus database updates, and program updates.

Hi MPH. If I disable all the three task (scheduled scans, virus database updates, and program updates) then the exclamation mark will appear. In AVG 7.5 if we disable the autoupdate the icon in the tray will not show grayed out. Therefore how to disable auto connection and no exclamation icon appeared? Thanks.

To be honest, I do not know what you want us to tell you. The exclamation indicates that the application or the database needs to be updated. I have been using AVG since 7.0 and no matter what the graphical representation, if the application or the database were outdated, AVG would let me know.

Since this is obviously a specific question, please open a new Discussion detailing your concerns.

Hi Piyush. Someone mentioned in another Discussion stated that Grisoft will support 7.5 until the end of the year.

Hmmm, Oh well. I have already replaced it with Avast! Although I liked AVG, I found it somewhat intrusive at startup, but not to a point I ever considered changing. Interesting observation, I wonder how long they will keep updating the Definitions. coastie

Hey Everyone!!

OK, since I have nothing better to do , I was surfing (the web) and found this blog;

Symantec Sucks . They were talking about AVG 8.0

and how they miss the old 7.5. However, some news is coming out that I thought you might like

to be aware of.

This is what one of the respondant had to say:

From the AVG Free forum: AVG Free SP1 is due for release in the next few weeks (mid july or earlier).
It will be a standard update to existing AVG Free 8.0 installation - no need to install new build.
It will have option in custom install screen to de-select the linkscanner component.
We
hope that this new option gives our valued customers the "choice" that
they have requested. Those who have experienced genuine problems with
web surfing speed can de-select the linkscanner.
However the
default "standard installation" will continue to install this valuable
security tool to protect users while they surf.
June 29, 2008 So, if you are asked to up-grade PLZ do so , as this will only enhance your security,

for those who chose to stay with AVG.

Stick with 7.5 - 8.0 has lots of cons vs 7.5
