I do not see how Internet Explorer 7 should play a part in this at all. I, and apparently several other members, completed the installation with little to no problem. Something you stated earlier still sticks in my mind. Is this your own personal computer that you use for work purposes or is this a computer provided to you by your job? If it is the latter, maybe SP3 is not supposed to be installed at all, or at least not right now. You indicated that you were going to talk to your job. Have you done that as of yet?

The whole IE7 thing doesn't make any sense to me either. I just gave it a try to see if something changed.

This is my own computer, just got it a few months ago. I'm still waiting to hear from company tech support as I think it entirely possible that the company software is the problem. I don't know when they'll get back to me. I've asked my supervisor about this and apparently no one else has tried to install SP3 yet.

I'm not working today so I had the time to dink around with this. Oh well, wait and see what comes.

From what I was able to get from the release notes was that if IE7 was installed when you installed SP3, you would not be able to uninstall IE7 at a later date. The IE8 beta was mentioned as well, but I don't do Micro$oft betas anyway. I didn't jump on IE7 out of the box either, but waited for a bit. coastie65

:D LOL Hi Number. I do not think this is that big of an issue. On a whim, I attempted the installation again. I first disabled StyleXP and I then removed Zone Alarm Pro from startup. I set a System Restore point and began the installation again. About 20 minutes later, I restarted the computer and, this time, the installation of SP3 went smoothly.

At this time, I am using the default Windows Firewall until I get a chance to verify that I have the latest version of Zone Alarm Pro. If I need to upgrade, so be it. As for StyleXP, well, so far, I can deal with the pseudo-bland look I have but if I start to miss my old settings, I will attempt to install the latest version of StyleXP as well.

I just did the update. I downloaded the file (which is about 324MB... took about 5 minutes) from MS's website, rather than doing the auto update thing. I created a restore point, but found out during the install that the update does one automatically before installing files. Before running the update, I cut my online connection (put modem in standby mode), disabled Zone Alarm, Spy Sweeper and NOD32, then ran the update file. The installation itself took about 5 minutes with no errors... or 10 minutes counting reboot, reload, etc. The first time the system rebooted, it hung on the Desktop, with no taskbar ever appearing. After a few minutes of no HDD activity, I gave the power button the one fingered salute. Second time was a charm. The system started up, loading all protection programs, without any problems. My experience was quite painless.

Hi MCBarker. What version of Zone Alarm do you have, Free or Pro? Do you have any issues once you enabled Zone Alarm again?

This is a useful thread as I was wondering about the same thing and have held off on SP3.

Does anyone know how long MSFT will continue to support (ie release patches and updates) for SP2?

Hey jimy!!

I believe that after the dead line imposed by MS or end of life for XP

we will not get any up-dates.

Now, I have come by some news that might be of interest to those of us who use AMD procs.

Woody of AskWoody.com . is reporting that:

||Windows XP Service Pack 3 endless reboots

!http://askwoody.com/images/logos/XP%20RIP.jpg!Do you have an HP computer with an AMD processor?

If so, and you have Windows XP's Automatic Updates turned on, you may be in for an unpleasant surprise.

Long-time Microsoft observer and MVP Jesper Johansson [got bit:

+"Last night WSUS deployed XP Service Pack 3 to the sole remaining
computer running XP that I have. This morning, I came down and was
greeted with incessant reboots. The computer booted, apologized for not
being able to boot properly, asked if I wanted to boot into safe mode,
defaulted to normal boot, rebooted, and so on and so on.+
+ It would boot into safe mode fine, so I did that. Not knowing what it
was, I ran a disk check, which turned out to be a real mistake. Once I
configured the computer to run a disk check at startup it would not
even boot into safe mode.+
+ Fortunately, I know Bill Castner, another Microsoft MVP, and he pointed
me to a solution. It turns out that this computer is running an OEM OS
image from HP. HP, apparently along other OEMs, deploy the same image
to Intel-based computers that they do to AMD-based computers. That
means they all have the intelppm.sys driver installed and running. That
driver provides power management on Intel-based computers. On an
AMD-based computer, amdk8.sys provides the same functionality.+
+ Ordinarily, having intelppm.sys running appears to cause no problems.
However, on the first reboot after a service pack installation, it
causes a big problem. The computer either fails to boot, as in my case,
or crashes with a STOP error code of 0x0000007e. It will boot into safe
mode because the drivers are disabled there.+
I repeat: turn off Automatic Updates. There's no compelling reason to
install WinXP Service Pack 3 just yet. Yes, you should install
Microsoft's other security patches and updates (although I remain
lukewarm about Vista Service Pack 1). But leave WinXP SP3 alone for now.

So, if you have an HP PC with a AMD processor,as in my case , then maybe we should wait and see

if this condition is resolved by either HP or MS.

Yep I've got one. Another compeling reason not to install SP3 yet.

Hey Number!!

Yeah , I was kinda disappointed when I read the article.

If you click on the "got bit" link from Jesper Johansson

It will bring you to his blog where you will see that he did find

a few "fixes"

|
He says that these should work , which ever one you chose to use.

So, maybe still hope for installation.

LILX found a way to install with some registry tweaks

but, he did not elaborate on which or how to tweak.

I will ask him in his thread.

Very interesting. My computer is not an HP but it does have an AMD sticker right on the front. I'm afraid I don't know much about the internal workings of my computer, but seeing that I do apparently have an AMD processor, I'm going to just wait and see how things fall out in the near future. Thanks for the info.

Hi MPH. I'm using the free version of Zone Alarm (v7.0.470.000). As I mentioned in my earlier post, the only glitch I experienced was the hang at the Desktop after reboot. I don't know what caused the hang, so can't say if it was a ZA conflict or not. After powering down the system, then restarting, there were absolutely no issues. The computer has been working flawlessly throughout the day with no signs of any confict with any other programs.

Hi MCBarker. I have confirmed that Zone Alarm Pro and Service Pack 3 do not work well together. When I have my computer booted within Windows XP SP3, everything works perfectly. The only issue I have is the second that I enable Zone Alarm. Once enabled, the computer freezes and I have to restart.

I am going to do some research and see if there is a way around this issue. Zone Alarm has been good to me for a long time so I would prefer not to have to switch.

That's a very good point. My older desktop with XP has a corporate application on it from years back so I could get on the AS/400 from home while recuperating from a surgery. I was going to update the clone before updating anyway, and I will have to wait until Tuesday night to use a friends HS broadband connection to download it. I am on satellite and although they have it fixed now and I am up to full speed (750kbps) I am limited to 200MB per day of downloads. Hey, it beats dial-up.

Well, to follow up since I started this thread, I have successfully installed SP3. I did so with help from all of you.

I do have an AMD processor. I was able to follow the editing registry suggestions above successfully, and quite simply, and SP3 installed without any other problems whatsoever.

Thanks to all of you.

Hey, That's good to hear. I'm still dragging my feet on that thing. I haven't gotten much incentive from some of these posts. LOL. coastie65
