I am trying to set up a network between a Vista Home Premium desktop and a XP Home laptop. When I try to access the desktop from the laptop, I get an Access is denied message. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks,
Ron

Yes, but I am using a 2wire983 broadband modem instead of a router. Sunday, I set both computers as trusted sites in Norton (the version of Norton that comes free with AT&T broadband service). After that, I could access the laptop from the desktop, but I couldn't access the desktop from the laptop. Windows said i may not have permission to access the C drive on the desktop. I think the problem is in Vista's permissions.
Thanks for trying to help me.

I can't find a reference for a "983 broadband modem", but from your description it appears it is a broadband modem with two outputs that acts somewhat like a wired router.
Next qustion - If you are connecting an XP or Win2K PC to a PC running Vista, the other PC (with XP or Win2K) MUST be password protected. Preferably with the same user name and password as on the Vista machine. Is this the case?
If not, please set up a username with a password that matches on on the Vista machine and see if you can access the Vista machine from the XP machine.

Can you provide more information on the "router"? There should be a sticker or plate on the back or bottom with information as to who manufactures it, and the model number.
Can you confirm that both PC's are connected directly to the "modem" via the ethernet cables?
Also please confirm that both computers have the same workgroup name as shown below from mine:

Please note: The default workgroup name in XP is MSHOME, the default workgroup name in Vista is WORKGROUP (as it was in all previous editions).

I use PC File Transfer. Need only Internet connection, no firewall blocking or cable disconnection problems.
Besides, if you have the computers in different rooms, it's so much easier to use this software instead of cables.
