Hi all,

My computer runs fine I'm just wondering which temperature read-out to trust.

I get the following readouts from various sources:

BIOS (for CPU): 26c

SpeedFan (CPU): 21c

SpeedFan (CPU, a second time for some reason): 40c

SpeedFan (Core 0 - 3): 40-45c

CoreTemp (Core 0-3) 47-50c

These temperatures are very confusing as they range so wildly - I'm assuming its the bios one which is correct, but I can't monior this from inside the OS, the only one close to that temperature is one of the two SpeedFan readouts.

Are the core speeds different to the CPU speed for a reason? I merely assumed they were an average of those?

Can somebody explain to me why they range so wildly, are they just incorrect? inaccurate or do they reprisent realistic temperatures?

For the record I'm not remotely worried about the temperatures - I know its all within normal range, I'm just curious as to which one is real and fake.

Thanks.

Hi alec, First, your temps are good. In bios, if you are getting a read at the first startup of the day, then the computer is and has not been under any load, thus the low read. If you run the computer for awhile and the do a restart and go into bios, you will most likely see a higher read. I have heard that speedfan is not exactly reliable. coastie65

Thanks for the reply but that isnt the problem, its quite warm in here and that wasnt the first boot of the day - I checked it several times to make sure, and even left BIOS on for a good 20 minutes to see if it warmed up but it stayed in the mid-low 20s the entire time.

hi AlecGalactic
I personally use coretemp as it is most accurate. But mine reads the same for coretemp and speedfan.

Can you tell what cpu is yours ? Also check and tell what is the Tj. max that both the applications are reading.

HI alec, Even if you left it run in bios all day, it probably wouldn't make much difference, as like I said, it is not running under any load in bios. As for the ambient room temp, it can play a part in your temps to some degree, but by all indications, your temps are fine and nothing to worry about. coastie65

I'm going to aim more towards your BIOS temperature because your BIOS is where Speedfan picks the most accurate information about your system. For better accuracy, you are usually able to choose from a range of processors from within Speedfan during setup and choose the one closest to what you have. Most of the time you'll be able to pick yours out from all the rest, but this will depend on how old your processor is.

The TJ max is 105c according to Core Temp, I'm not sure where its located on SpeedFan, but I'd imagine its the same.

My CPU is a Q9300.

And yeah I know its nothing to worry about, but I'd just like to know for reference.

Also its interesting to note that whilst playing CoD4 on max graphics max resolution the temperature is only rising on CoreTemp by litterally 5c when with my other CPU Fan (I just refitted one this morning) it was going up by around 30-40c from the idol of 50 to a load of around 80

See the tj max in core temp is 105C for your cpu while it will be shown as 95C by another application realtemp. Thus on coretemp the temps will come up 10C higher than the realtemps one. Its still not clear which value of Tj. max is actual , as the intel people have not published these values anywhere. But to be on the safer side , you can use the (higher one) coretemps temperature.
