I checked many pages of discussions and did not come up with an answer to above. Maybe worried for nothing? Have always kept OS up to date at Windows Update--now it i will be gone. Did install SP 3. Any ideas? Thanks. Dualband.

What will lack of support for WIN XP cause for security issues?

Yes and no.
No in that Micro$oft will continue to support XP for a while longer (forget the exact time frame, but it is at least two to three years). This means that they will continue to put out bug and security patches.
Yes as in they will NOT be adding any new features or functionality to it. Thus, if there is an inherent security weakness due to how XP functions at it core, that will not change.

Hey Dualband!!
Welcome to PCWorld Community!
Ok, this is from one of my news letters.
WindowsSecrets.com .
In it, Susan Bradley explains what you can look forward to.
Read her article online from here:
Susan Bradley .
Actually, this is the whole news letter that I have received but ,
the online version.
Just scroll down to about half the page until you see the heading:
h2. XP Service Pack 3: not yet ready for prime time.
This should give you the answer you are looking for.

From my viewing, as long as an OS is still being supported, security patches/bug fixes should still be released. I believe when XP is taken off the shelf updates will cease, but we've got a year or two left before this OS is completely crippled.
Windoze XP will be "taken off the shelf" later this month (i.e. no longer sold), but will be supported until July 2010 (with at least SP2). Extended support is scheluded to go until 2014, I believe (this would be security fixes, but no bug fixes). Thus, there is a LONG time be Windoze XP becomes "crippled".
