This morning when I woke up, my computer screen stated "FreeDOS FAT' and has not booted into my desktop. I am not sure what to do. Can anyone help? I have an HP, XP OS.

Hi Ialberto and welcome to the forum. The information you gave is a bit sketchy. You stated "when you woke up", does this mean your computer was left up and running or when you booted up this morning ? FAT is the old file system. FAT 32 and before that I think DOS was FAT 16. Either way XP uses the NTFS file system. When you stsrt the computer, you can tap the F10 key and go into your boot section of BIOS. It show show that you are booting from "C" ( The Hard Drive ). If it doesn't then it should be changed. coastie65

Thank you very much for you help. Yes, the computer was left on over night. When I woke up this morning, the screen said "FreeDOS FAT". I've tired restarting the computer and it keeps going to the same screen. When the comptuer restarts, I pushed esc and it gives me a Boot Menu, selected an option that took me straight to my desktop. However, I still have the same issue when the computer starts. So, I restarted the computer pressed F1, and went into BIOS Utility and under first device it said floppy and changed it the C Drive. Was that correct? When the computer restarted, it went into my desktop.

Hi, Yep, you did good. It was apparantly trying to boot from the floppy. I didn't ask if you had left a disk in the floppy drive, but I suspect you did and for some reason there was a power interrupt during the night that caused a reboot situation and that was why you found what you did on the screen. You should be sure to take out any floppies or CDs after you finish if you are going to leave the computer on over night. Anyway, you should be alright now that it is set to boot from "C". If this has solved your problem, you can mark the question as answered and assign the points accordingly. coastie
