Hi,this question is for anyone that may be able to tell me how to convert xfd files to xml or whatever format that is readable as of now i have them on my pc as encrypted,thank,s

I don't know how to this directly, but you can use google to find a .xfd to .pdf converter, then find a .pdf to .xml converter.

Just Google the phrases in bold above.

First - to determine which version of Word that you have is easy. If you have a ribbon across the top rather than the traditional pull down menu, you have 2007. If you have the traditional pull down menu you either have 2003 or 2000, which are very similar.

Second - I would assume that this file is one that was sent to you. Ask the person who sent it to you what program they used to generate it, or ask them to send it to you in a format that you can open. The file extension .xfd is an older one and Word does not open it. You may have confused it with .xml.

this is in reponse to your answer i looked at your e-mail again and the docs i got said xfd,but you know whats really annoying is that this is something that should be built into MS os. so you do not hunt for a way to open any type of document,to me all you would have to do right a program reconizes what sending program is to the one receiving the docs.

Hi Whisky. I can definitely understand your frustration but this is really not something for which Microsoft should take any blame. Microsoft is just the entity that provides the Operating System upon which you use your computer. The specific issue you have is related to not having the right application on your computer to read a particular file. For example, if you were sent a .doc file but did not have Microsoft Word installed on your computer, you could not open or read that .doc file.

As RGreen pointed out, whomever sent you the file should be able to tell you how to open and read the file. Short of that, here is a Discussions that may help you thread.

From what I have found is that this is an revisable text document format at one time used by the U.S. Air Force, and not generally found in the civilian community except possibly in some Govt or Legal offices using dedicated proprietary systems. MS Word will generally open any STANDARD format used by commercial consumer PC based word processors, but not specialized formats used by stand-alone dedicated word processors or proprietary word processing packages for a very simple reason - they can't get the file structure and formatting, add in possible encryption and it even becomes more of a challenge.

Twenty years ago we ran into this when we converted the documents at our mill locations from IBM dedicated word processors to WordPerfect. Even though WordPerfect (in use at that time) was running on IBM PC's, if we wanted the document in WP, we had to print it out and re-enter. Which we did as we needed to update and revise the documents.

As pointed out, you need to contact whomever sent you the document to find out what was used to generate it. Have them convert it to a PDF format if they can. This is precisely the situation that the PDF format was developed.

Hi, this what i used to open xfd files.

when got it downloaded and finished with download i clicked on xfd file and it came right up this is free a download

that you from the goverment as what they trying to do is to let everyone have the ability to open any type of file at least thats what was said i got this on MS web site
