Hello!

I am the original poster. Thank you for your input on Sony vs. HP. I actually bought the HP Pavillion I described and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. (I've been taking it to work and wondered what all these emails were about. Apparently, hot laptops generate more posts than brand preferences! haha). No worries about changing the topic. My new HP laptop actually is a bit warm under my palms.

But here's a question for the group: Why is my laptop hotter at home than at work? Is it all about the work area surrounding my laptop? At home, I have it on my dining room table (which is covered by a cloth (cotton/blend) tablecloth. Yes, I'll admit to some clutter on the table, too. At work, I've been working on a clean desk made of some composite material. Is it as simple as de-cluttering my home work space to make it run cooler under my palms like at work?

Thanks!

It could be a function a number of things.

* Room temperature. If your office is cooler than your home, then that could result in less available "natural" cooling at home.
* Work area/surface. Depending on the model of the laptop, it might dissipate heat by a fan off the sides or bottom OR just by heat radiating from the computer. Depending on how the laptop is sitting, what it is sitting on, and how it disspates heat, that could result in differences that result in how easily it is for the computer to cool itself.
* Type of use. If you are doing more "intensive" stuff at home compared to work, then it might result in more heat being generated.

Hey JB!!

Sorry we took over your thread like that. This would be my fault. I didn't realize that

riko wasn't the original poster. Like I said, I too, have the same or almost same notebook.

Mine would be the dv9834ca . The Canadian version but, for all intent and purposes,

it's the same specs.

Now , for your question. Yes, the ambient air will make a difference, as will the surface it rests on.

As mentioned by rgreen, a flat hard surface is best for air circulation. When you're at work , the air is conditioned

to a certain degree of temperature and mostly constant. When at home , if you work on a cloth surface then,

it will effect the air circulation as there is more resistance then a hard flat surface. Also the temperature in a house

will fluctuate. If you are near a kitchen where cooking is in progress then yes , the ambient air will be effected.

So, the air that is intaked by the notebook will also be warmer thus resulting in a less effective cooling

procedure.

it seems , in my experience with this notebook , that a certain time is needed for it to stabilize to a normal temperature.

A "Burning In" of sorts. After over three weeks of working with mine , the temperature has leveled off to a comfortable

temperature

I hope I provided you with the information that you requested and again, sorry for taking over your thread.

Hey riko !!

I think if you would like to convert to a tiered system of protection

we would have to start a new thread. (the mods would not let us get away with it again) .

So, just go to the Privacy and Security forum .and start

a new thread. You will be getting allot of advice from people who know security first hand and will advise

on the best possible scenario for your situation.
