Windows update keeps asking me to install SP3, Haven't paid alot of attentin to the risks, but I know there some issues in regards to its installation. Should I or should I not? System has been working fine I'd hate to make a change or an addition I'l regret, any thoughts on this? Like putting in a different gas in your car, it may not like it, what do you think?

Happy Solstice

hi arcticsid
You should install the SP3 update . It contains a couple of reliability updates that will make the system better. So many of us here have installed sp3 without any problems. And sp3 isn't a new update , its been there for so long now.
At any time after the update , if you feel to go back to sp2 then you can do that easily. So why not update.

Hey arcticsid!!

If you are not sure as to how you install SP3, my suggestion

is to read this thread carefully Installing XP SP3 .

There, you will find LOTS of information on how others installed

successfully SP3 and also some good links as to what to expect

This link to Microsoft will show you how to "Uninstall" SP3 should anything go wrong

How to remove Windows XP SP3 .

As always , if you should encounter any problems , come back to this thread

and post your concerns.

I hope this will help you in deciding on which course of action to take.

:D Hi :

IF you use a Setting other than "Automatic" in Windows Updates, then you would NOT

keep being "asked" !? Before considering "Updating" to XP SP3, would be wise to read

the Info contained in the "Windows Secrets" Newsletter

WindowsSecrets.com/comp/080529 AND

Why would you not want to install sp3, as the others said its good for your system and makes it faster, but i seriously don't see a change in speed on my computer but i would install it anyway since it supposedly updates to current security hotfixes and other stuff

Like others have said, you should do it.

Give yourself about an hour dealing with it :|

Be forewarned though: If you have a Hewlett Packard with an AMD processor , SP3 will cause your PC to go into endless reboots.

Hewlett Packard has a patch for this, but it did not work for me.

Why is HP releasing a patch for a MS problem anyways?

After being prompted for a couple days to update the XPPRO install on a HP unit, I went ahead and did it. It seemed to take an awful long time but it worked out okay. No patches were required or anything so all went well. I always try to keep up to date with the upgrades and updates and the unit exhibited no problems before hand so I was not expecting anything to go wrong. Glad it didn't and others should have nothing to fear.

DO NOT get SP3 from Windows Update.
Instead download Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe and install with that.

Download here 316.4 MB

Yeah but is it an HP Pavillion Desktop, with an AMD 64 CPU, ASUS motherboard and Windows XP Media Center Edition?

Sorry should have been more specific in my last post. If you have the above than you need the HP patch.

I can't install SP3 because my system is as above, and like MS & HP said, it caused endless reboots and of course the HP patch won't run on my PC. HP support does have any idea why!

Hey Ripose!!

If your Pc re-boots endlessly when trying to install SP3,

have you tried this fix :

Jesper Johannson's blog .

He used to work for MS and was the first to find a fix for this problem.

Flashorn: Thanks for the link to a great website.

However the link to the SP3 Fix is dead. I'll look again later.
