I've legally aquired a copy of the movie stardust. It got scratched up from being lost under a pile of papers that got moved.

How can I circumvent the encryption/copy protection in order to make a new copy of the dvd since it will not play on my computer or set-top dvd player?

I was able to do a byte-by-byte copy and it was sucessfull after about 2 hours of CRC to verify that the data had been copied. But when i played the video files, they looked awful because they weren't decrypted.
any thoughts?
