Cannot Play Video Clips Using Windows Media Player - Only Sound

I take video clips with my digital camera (AV format) which are played through Windows Media Player. They have always worked perfectly I now find that I can only hear sound, the screen stays blank.
I have made no changes to WMP. If however I down load a video from the internet it works perfectly (Audio and Video). The only thing I have done is to download a video from Sky which demonstrates what HD TV looks like. It still works perfectly
Can anyone help me. ? I have downloaded WMV again but this hasn't cured it. The WMV settings, which I have not changed, look OK
Thanks
Ian

Hi Lane and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D
First, some housekeeping. I have changed your Discussion title to give a clearer indication of your question. For future reference, please be as descriptive as possible in both the heading of your Discussion as well as the post itself. Also, since this issue is related to Windows Media Player, I have moved this Discussion from the Windows Community into the Music & Video Software Community.
Now, Windows Media Player is a fickle application. Most of the time, the latest codecs are required to play videos properly. The information you presented so far is good; however, we need more information to begin troubleshooting your issue:
- What version of Windows Media Player do you have?
- What Operating System are you using?
- "wmv" is a file type, not an application. When you stated, "I have downloaded WMV again..." did you mean Windows Media Player?
Without knowing these things, the only thing I can suggest at this time is to download and install K-Lit Codec Pack which is available via the hyperlink. Once you provide the additional information, we can begin.

Just recently I installed a graphic card to play games on my PC. After that my PC cannot play any video (VLC player, Window media player, etc). So I consulted a friend who adviced me to adjust the followings and it worked for me. Maybe you can give it a try :-
1) right click on your main desktop page 2) go to properties 3) choose settings 4) choose Advance 5) choose the 'Troubleshoot' tab
6 ) In this page there is a scroll (left to right) for Hardware acceleration 7) scroll the tab to the extreme left (to the none side of the scroll) and press apply then
OK. Hopefully it works. Give it a try and good luck.

Sufz14, you might want to manually visit the Windows Update website to see if there's a driver update for your new graphic card. It's been my experience that driver updates are not included in the Automatic Updates that MS sends out. If there is, you might be able to reenable hardware acceleration.

Maybe you can give it a try. U can start by finding out what make and model ur graphic card is.Then surf for the updated downloads. It works for me and I do not have to toggle the acceleration bar.
Regards and have a Superfantastic life.

Ian,
Do you have Microsoft's auto updates enabled? If so, it's most recent updates may have done something. Make sure you have "show updates" ticked in "add/remove programs" to take a look. Not sure, but I have had auto updates change things that I wish they had not.
I have had real good luck with this tool " http://www.cole2k.net/ "and WM10 on XP SP3 (Yes I upgraded to Service Pack 3, no problems yet, cross fingers, hair and toes) AMD 2.7Ghz with 2 gigs of ram
Good luck
