I use Nero 6 to backup my DATA. My computer crashed and i had to reinstall my Systems Disc's. Doing so, i Deleted everything...Including my "NBI" Targets. I receive an error message when i try to reinstall one of my recent backup's. What should i do. I tried to use DATA recovery software, no Luck.-Terry.

Hi W9353 and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

First, some housekeeping. I have changed your Discussion title to give a clearer indication of your question. For future reference, please be as descriptive as possible in both the heading of your Discussion as well as the post itself. Also, this issue has more to do with the crash and reinstallation of Windows than it does with Nero. Therefore, I have moved this Discussion from the Utilities Community into the Answer Line Community.

Now, I am not sure you have many options at this point. If I understand you correctly, you performed data back up using Nero. Your computer crashed. When you reinstall Windows using the System CDs provided with your computer, everything was deleted (formatted). Is that a correct summation? If so, I am not sure you can do anything to recovery your data.

I have some questions for you:

- Did you back up to CDs or DVDs or did you just back up into another drive?

- Do you have any external backups? (probably not or you would not have posted this issue but I figured I would ask)

- Using Nero, how exactly did you back up your data? (what were the exact steps)

I backed up my DATA to an CD/RW. But, when i reinstalled my Operations disc my NBI Targets (They'er like cookies to a website) where Deleted as well. The NBI Targets are placed in the Programs Foulder when a Backup is completed. Without the NBI Target i can't access my DATA from my DATA Disc even if i use my Password. -w9353

I do not think you have much recourse at this point. This may be a clear case of not having enough back up options. Here's the thing. You used Nero to back up your data (which in itself is fine). However, in a normal burning process, the data you burnt to the CD is simply "copied" from the source folder to the CD. There really should be no need for any additional steps.

Now, I notice that each time you reference "data" you capitalize it. Without presuming anything, is there some sort of significance with this data or is that just the way you typed it?

In any regard, this forum loves this motto...."Backup, Backup, Backup." You can never have enough back up options. I personally have five back up sources. If one fails, I have four more to use. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but unless you have an additional back up source, you may be out of luck.

You might see if this helps: www.cdrlabs.com/forums/how-restore-files-without-the-nbi-file-t23756.html

I hope that helps...but for future reference, I will now do an impression of someone's mother chidding them and say "you should keep the NBI (backup catalog) files on a seperate drive somewhere...i.e. back them up". :) Sorry...could not resist the urge to say that. I will try to be good now. ;)
