here is new stuff for you all to chew upon. Its really good. Msft has come up with their new software called WWT or World Wide Telescope. The name tells all and its FREE.
Check out this link -http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/
For direct download the link is - http://content.world...te/wwtsetup.msi
Somewhat like google earth but it covers universe. hehe
I just tried this thing on vista SP1. It crashed on first start and I found a way through it. Its a dx10/dx9 issue. During install on vista if the installation asks for directx update , then allow it to install dx9 over dx10. It is necessary. If it does not ask , then navigate to the install folder and run the dxsetup there and it will be fine.
The program took a little bit of time (around 30 seconds) to start but after that worked fine.
There is a lot to explore here and a lot of amazing things to see. You wont believe it.Plus it has got enough for wallpaper fans .Check it out.

Nice to see you have a little fun now that school is out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I installed WWT about one month ago on my other notebook which
has the DIrectX 9oc and did not have any problems.I also installed it
on my youngest's notebook with same specs.
When I bought my new notebook, that was one of the first programs I
installed . This one came with Vista SP1, as you well know ,along with
DierectX10 or could it be possible that I saw 10.1 , I'm not sure.
In any case I did not have the problems that you describe.
Mine did in fact install the first time around and has not given me
any problems at all.
Surprising that MS would be so generous with it's resources and offer us the opportunity
to visit the planets for free.
Thanks for mentioning this wonderful program Piyush.

I didnt expected that anyone else would have already tried this thing . You are always in the front for trying out new and interesting things. Adama had once mentioned you as INFOMAN and rightly so. Your arsenal is full of utilities. :D
Ya the application did crash the first time i tried to run , then i just navigated to the folder and saw the dxsetup there and figured out that it was a dx9 issue. After that it was working fine.
I have just a few more days for my fun left. You know, starting from august would be my last year at the university and I will be too much busy in the first month of this session. I wont be here much in august. So i m really trying out all my experiments this month. :)

That's because I have nothing better to do LOL!
I did mention this to Adama last week in an other thread (forget which one right now)
I also mentioned this site G-Force by SoundSpectrum .
It is a visualization program that incorporates in with your music player (ie. WMP11 or WMP10 or WMP9 or which ever you are using).
You will have to choose from a list upon downloading the FREE version. If you saw the screen shots that I
posted in coastie's Birthday thread well, these were generated from this plug-in.You can take screenies directly from the
context menu (right click) in WMP or the player that you use. This company provides the large back drop screens at concerts.
They have been around for quite a few years . So, maybe you could check it out. Works well in either XP or Vista.
Sorry to hear that you have to go back so soon but, better to get it over with and come join us in the real World.LOL!

Looks like WWT and G-Force are a totally awesome, win-win combination, right? INFOMAN FTW ! ! !
You like to experiment with everything. Me, I'm such a chicken I don't dare cross the street alone, let alone install stuff on my computer! hehe

Yes, I guess I like change and to experiment with new programs.
it keeps your mind and skills alert.
If something should go wrong , in my case I know enough to get by.
If you should encounter some difficulties even though you would get a blue
screen , ( don't panic) Vista will recover and all you have to do is take down the error code,
start a new thread and solve your problem. you know there is always someone around to help.
Also , you know that Google is your friend. Most, if not all, of the error codes are cataloged
in Google and you can find a resource on one of the other forums, if need be.
This way you get the experience of trying to solve your own problem, which in turn , adds to your expertise.
So, don't be afraid, just be careful that you know who the program is from, and all should be fine.

Are you running Vista, maybe you should try it in XP. LOL!
Just kidding Piyush.
I have not tried it this week but I didn't have any problems last week.
I did notice that the internet is taking a long time to load all of the
sites I want to visit tonight. I even had a couple time out on me.
So, maybe that is effecting you to. But, I'm not sure about WWT.
I have to go to bed now . It's 04:10 in the morning here in Canada.
I know , you can laugh all you want, you already got your night's sleep.
I will look like a Zombie latter on today if I don't get at least 4 hrs of sleep.
Although , some people will say that , that is the way I look ALL the time LOL!
So, I will bid you Goodnight and Good Day to you Piyush.

I just played around with it for about 15 minutes ( This is amazing ).
No problems at all. No buffering , and no intermittent images. So, I guess it's on your
side. You do realize that this is a Beta right? One thing I forgot to do is
to check how much memory this thing uses .
OK, I'm off to bed.Talk to you latter Piyush!
FLASHORN.
PS> Piyush , you mentioned in your first responce to me that you had to revert back to
the DX9oc. If in Vista , could you not use the DX 10? This might be your problem.

No way I can run that thing on XP. Xp is on my machine which has following specs. P3 @ superfast 933MHz. it has 256MB of supercharged ram running hot at 133MHz . wow .Even XP lags a bit on this thing. No way that WWT will run on this.Even the min. specs are more than this.
So by the time you write the second post , it would be about 5 there. Anyway this happens with me also .
regarding dx9 - i didnt revert back to dx9.0c , only a few components of dx9.0c were added. The system properties still show dx10. btw - vista comes with dx10 , it cant be 9 . This is fine , as this has to be done with many of the old games that i have. Installing some dx9 components over dx10 . No problems with that.
I think its the net speed that is hurting me. :( I do know you all people have mind blowing sort of speeds. I still remember a thread of net speeds and if i m not mistaking that was started by you only. hehe. And i deliberately skipped that thread. lol ;-)

I had trouble some with a netio.sys bsod but msft people were kind enough to mail me a specific fix for that problem . A small patch they send me and after that no more BSoDs. :)
