Hey rub13dez!!
It is alright to have disabled Windows defender. But what you might not know is that there is better
free Antivirus protection out there.
First, Avast Antivirus has a better detection rate then AVG. Both come with AntiSpyware and both are free.
There is also Avira by AntiVir which has a better detection rate then both but, is a bit quirky and should only be used by
people who are more apt. at working with software.
I would recommend you use Avast instead of AVG but that is up to you.
You can visit Avast here Avast AntiVirus .
.
It is also a good idea to have a second AntiSpyware program as a "On Demand" scanner.
This one would only come up if you would like to have a second opnion as far as scanning your PC
goes. Not all antispyware scan for the same spyware definitions
For the On Demand scanner I would recommend SUPERAntispyware.
You can visit SuperAntispyware here SUPERAntispywar
.
Now you did not mention that you had a Firewall. The one that comes with Vista is adequate.
But, if you have XP then I would be looking for a new Firewall. There are good and free Firewalls.
If you need additional info. just ask and we will help.
There is one last recommendation that I would like to make and that is SpywareBlaster.
This one will work in the back ground and will be the first line of defense on your PC.
There is a free version but, you would have to up-date the definitions everyday .
The paid version , on the other hand , Is $9.99 for a years subscription and up-dates
itself. This is the one investment I would make.
Visit SpywareBalster here SpywareBlaster .
Hope this will help.

Hey rub13dez!!
Yes, Avast does come bundled with an antispyware program. I would recommend
that you keep Defender disabled for this reason. There might some conflict which
might slow down your PC. This is what Avast's site says about it's product ( part of what they say)
All-inclusive and comprehensive protection FREE avast! antivirus
Home Edition includes ANTI-SPYWARE protection, certified by the West
Coast Labs Checkmark process, and ANTI-ROOTKIT DETECTION based on the
best-in class GMER technology. No additional purchase is required.
So, yes it does come with antispyware protection and for this reason I
would still disable Windows Defender.
I recommend Avast for its ease of use therefore you should leave all enabled.
One more question , Once you uninstalled AVG did you verify that there are no more
program files left in it's folder on the C:Drive.
To access : Go to , Start , Computer , Double Click on the C;Drive ,
From the generated page , Double Click on "Program Files"
In the next window, all of your programs should be in
Alphabetical Order. Verify that there is no AVG Files.
IF there is , left click to highlight the folder and then left click and choose "Delete"
If you have any more questions rub , just call!

For Avast to function at its Best, it is IMPORTANT, as "Flash" said, to make sure, AVG has
been COMPLETELY REMOVED from your computer, even using the "AVG Removal Advice"
at www.pchell.com/virus/uninstallavg.shtml .
And I 2nd the Advice to "disable" Windows Defender on your Vista Operating System
computer; "SUPERAntiSpyware", even the FREE Version, is ONE of the Best programs of
its "type" . As to Avast's "VRDB" : it stands for "Virus Recovery DataBase" and it is
recommended it be "Generated", usually by RIGHT-clicking the bluish "a" ball, selecting
"VRDB" and clicking the appropiate Setting. IF you have BOTH an Avast "a" ball AND an
Avast "i" ball, I recommend you select the Setting to "merge" them . Once "generated", it
usually "re-generates" every 21 days . NOTE : those with a Vista OS should NOT use
the "Screen-saver" Setting for "re-generation" of the VRDB .
AND to familiarize yourself with the Avast program, I encourage you to read through the
"FAQ"s at [http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-avast-4-home-professional.html] .

The "Purpose" of having "real-time" protection is to keep malware from getting on a
computer; for something that possibly MAY not be in the database of an antiVIRUS
program the use of "on-demand" antiSPYWARE/antiTROJAN programs is
recommended as a "BackUp" in case that remote possibility occurs. On my computer,
I have Avast 4.8 and as "BackUps", I run scans about every 2 wks of my FREE Version
of BOTH "SUPERAntiSpyware" AND "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" .
Another "Item" of Protection is a "Firewall" ; although the Built-In Vista OS One is
half-way decent, I have heard it is "Rules-based" . Most people prefer the easier-to-
operate "Application-based" firewall, and the One I recommend is PC Tools Firewall
Plus, available at www.pctools.com/firewall/.
