By the way Piyush !

The new versions of JK do not Install as they are only .exe.

You just have to double click and it starts automatically.

You could also use the Command window that is packaged with the .zip file

to schedule regular defrags.

The longest a defrag took me using the XP defragger is about 8 hours on a pretty highly fragmented drive. Right now I am using the auto defrag Diskeeper. Havent really checked how long it takes, but the drives are neatly defragged.

Hey Adama!!

I did a defrag last night with JKDefrag after discussing it with Piyush and it took

about 35 minutes to complete. As you know, both, Piyush and I defrag on a regular basis.

If I'm not mistaken ,on the JK site J. Kessels explains the virtues of defragmenting on a

regular basis rather than on a Very fragmented disk.

If you visit the site ,for which I have posted links to ,( Not the link that will make you fall off your seat.LOL! )

and scroll down to the FAQs ( The explanations are in plain English ) section , you will have all of your

questions answered.

And BTW, this defragmenter does not install on your notebook . it is a simple .exe . All you would have to do

is double click on the .exe and it will start automatically.

So your question - it takes me about 30 mins to defrag and i defrag on a weekly basis.
You should run it weekly.

My personal advice to all those running jkdefrag on vista - uninstall it , dont use it , it will give problems. Trust me. It is fine for XP.

Hi Piyush,

Hi Flashorn,

I finally got a chance to get back here. LOL :)

Well, really interesting conversation going on between you and INFOMAN er..... Flashorn.

So I wanted to tell the two of you (even though Flash laughs at me when I chicken out.....LOL:^0 ) what happened to me yesterday when that JK zipped thingy tried to install itself to my computer = I got an immediate red flag from Trend MicroAV, saying that it needed my help and to click on the balloon (the notice on my Notification Area.)

When I clicked on the balloon it opened up Trend Micro with a red Fix This Problem, which I had never seen before. Apparently when the thing tried to install itself it brought with it some malware, because as soon as I clicked on Fix This Problem, started to scan my computer. It took about 1hr and 45 (+/-) mins. And when it finished it said that it had taken care of 1 threat.

So Flashorn dear, I will not be playing around with that JK thingy any more. OOo_0 I can hear you laughing now, don't deny it! :p :^0

Hi Tech,

Thanks for the link and the Snip. Auslogics Disk Defrag looks interesting. But, you don't mind using a Beta program to do your Defragging?

And, I thought you said that you had Vista.... ?:|

OFF TOPIC:

You changed your avvie! This one is very patriotic.

Defragging once a week. Hmmmm.... let's see... !http://forums.pcworld.com/legacyimages/
1!

Defrag time - once a week === 1 hr +/- mins.

4 weeks in a month === 4 hr +/- mins.

Total Defrag time = approximately 5 hr (give or take +/- mins.)

1! "Hey look, I can count to 5!" "But it hurts my brain......"

1! I should say, maybe not too different from my Defrag time, eh guys?

Hey Adama!!

LOL! Now you know I would NEVER do such a thing, Nope, not me.But, you are pretty funny though!

OK,Adama, here is what you could expect to see if you had downloaded the JK zippy thingy .

First , let me tell you that Trend Micro is too sensitive. The .zip file contains a Wallpaper .exe

That's what triggered your AV . This wallpaper IS the JK thingy. You can have the defrag as a

wallpaper for the time it defrags. VERY COOL.

Anyways, I'll show you what happens with this direct link ( don't you think that was a cool way of getting a program? )

When you click on "that" link this is what you are asked:

1!

Since I use WinRAR to open all of my downloads, it automatically opens and

saves as .RARs.

Now , this only asks you if you want to download. It has not yet downloaded.

You Click on OK , and the download process starts.

Next , your download manager will download and Save the file to a place that you have specified

before when you set up the download manager. Mine goes to Documents and Settings.

This is what you see when the download manager opens to download the file:

1!

As you can see well, there is nothing to see now because the file is already downloaded.

But, you can clearly see where the files are now located. "Documents"

This next shot will be in the "Documents Folder"

1!

You can clearly see the JKDefrag .WinRAR.Zip file along with

other installers in the same folder.

FootNote: it would be wise to Back-Up all of your installers once in a while

just in case you would lose a folder or have a system crash. This can be easily done

by simply Burning the said installers to a CD or a DVD and keep in a safe place.

This way , you save yourself the grief of having to run around the internet trying to find

those installers again. Especially the programs that you have bought.

OK, now where was I, OH yes, as you see the WinRAR.ZiP is still not open

so, there still is no danger of infection

This is why we have a RightClick option or a Context Menu with the right click

of the mouse, to choose to scan with our security's shell .

This is what you should see when you first setup your Antivirus or Antispyware

( This is just an example but, you should have this option for all of your security programs )

1!

As you can clearly see, we have an option to:

"Create right click menu to scan files ( context menu )"

With this option enabled, when you download a file to the HDD

you simply highlight the file with right click and then left click

to have the context menu come up from which you would

choose , in your case Trend Micro , to scan the file Before

you open it.

So, I hope this will put your fears to rest Adama.

You can do this scan for ANY file that you download

Trusted or Otherwise.

Adama:

Defragging is only the last step of a long but weekly process I do on all my computers. It begins with a new system right after I install an OS, the software I intend to use and any updates/upgrades to the OS that are needed. At that point I then defrag the drive. Then each week I do a spybot check, adware check, virus check, disk cleanup and a defrag. the initial defrag usually takes about 90 minutes, subsequent defrags only around 20 minutes. My last extensive defrag was right after I did the SP3 update to XPPRO and it took an hour. Sometimes the defrag program says I don't need to do a defrag, in which case I will skip it for that week.

Hi MJD,

I kind of do the same weekly thing = SpySweeper scan and Trend MicroAV once a week (on different days,) as well as a quick scan by Defender. I know, I know, you guys hate Defender, but I figure what the heck, it's there, so I might as well use it.

Then up to now, I had been Defragging every two months, on the 1st day of the month. But like I mentioned before, I've been doing a lot of researching on the web for my friend, as well as adding a bunch of new programs, and I know that's the reason for the long Defrag time.

From now on I'm going to Defrag once a week, just like you guys' do. And like you said, it should probably take way less time, next time as well as each consecutive week.

Nice Eagle, Tech. I love Eagles. The Native Americans call the Eagle "the Messenger," as well as the Hawk. MY TWO MOST FAVE BIRDS IN THE WWW (whole wide world.)

There are lots of Hawks over here where I live, and some Eagles too. I hear the Hawkies every day, and I ask them what message they have for me. And I always send them a Hi Hawkie greeting and a blessing. .... I know, I'm weird like that ..... LOL

Happy 4th to you too! "Oooh oh say, can you see.... with the dawn's early light....."

The main reason for defragging is to get all the OS files and other software files into a single unbroken chain in sequence. This makes for faster loading as the drive can find all of the files in order and not have to search all over the drive to find all of the files. I do this in the initial loading of the dydtem, first by determining which programs are going to be run the most and load them first. The biggest problem is getting the loading order such that they all play nice together. I've found that after loading the OS, the next should be the video card programs and then the sound card stuff. After that comes the printer/scanner software and then would be the add on stuff like web cam stuff and maybe then the games you play. After the OS is loaded, I load each program and then check that everything works okay, the progress through the order, checking each time to be sure all works well. Sometimes I have to load a different one first and then another to get them to work together. The drivers of some software overwrites a previous driver and wacko, the first one doesn't work anymore. Once I get everything working together, I back it up and save it for the untimely event that a new program sends all awry and I have a stable known good basic system to start with again.

OK Adama , time to get more technical now. hehe Posted Image
Count is fine but only if normal decimal rules apply here. Unfortunately not. 1+1=10 for computers(binary). OK , jokes apart.

Time to defrag not only depends upon frequency but also on how large the disk is and how much fragmented it has become. See the good point of defragmenting regularly. If you have a defragged drive , then the new data that is stored goes to contiguous memory locations and the drive remains defragmented or less fragments are created. If the drive is fragmented , the new data stored will be in random locations leading to more fragments being created.
To summarize - A slightly fragmented drive will get even more fragmented than a defragged one in the same time.

Make it run weekly and it will be good.

It takes me about 30 min to 1 hour to defrag my Hard Drive.

I never worry about how long defragging takes. I currently have 4 drives, totalling more than 1.5 TB, and they suffer from minimal fragmentation at any point in time. This is because my defragmenter is fully automatic, and I never have to bother with scheduling defrags. In fact, I never even think about defragging these days, despite the heavy I/O 3 of my drives see (one is at 6 % free space, but still fully defragmented) . Automatic defragmenters FTW :D

Hi Piyush!

I heard you, loud and clear. hehe So, guess what I did today?

Today I did my Disk CleanUp first and then I Defragged again. Yes, I did! I was cleaning house anyway, so it was a good time to start my weekly Defragging regimen.

IT ONLY TOOK 1 HR and 30 MINS. !http://forums.pcworld.com/legacyimages/

Hi CrimsonHawk, looong time no see you!

That's really awesome that your Defragging is totally automatic, are you using Vista's defragmenter or a separate program?

(.....psst... you said FTW... do you know what that means and where it came from?... ;) .....)
