Please, can anyone recommend good software to rip (copy) video FROM a DVD TO a computer hard drive?

Freeware preferred, if available, please, and user-friendly for beginners would be GREAT.

Thank you; I'd very much appreciate any and all advice and help.

If this is a commercial DVD, it is illegal to do so.

As noted, this is a kind of sticky subject on this forum. The fact is that in the US, the DMCA makes it illegal to rip most commercial DVDs into a form to be played from a comptuer hard drive or iPod like device or a device like an AppleTV. This is due to the fact that most commercial DVDs contain CSS encryption that is there for copy protection purposed. And the DMCA makes circumventing any encryption/copy protection scheme technically illegal, even if the it would otherwise be legal under copyright Fair Use exceptions.

The end result is that this question kind of falls into a nice gray area that potentially violates the [PCWorld Community Standards|d-1000]. Thus, I am going to lock this discussion. If things change then we can revisit the question.
