Okay I own same camera for nearly 3 years (Nikon Coolpix 7600). No problems with it until couple weeks ago when it just won't download pictures to the computer at all. I did contact Nikon Support Line for their assitance and they weren't able to help me.

So I thought I would buy memory card reader to download them until I buy new camera and well it is giving me hard time. I cannot believe that Vista gives me so much grief! I loved my XP but too bad my old computer crashed or I would NEVER use Vista ever. Well I would plug it in and nothing happens. It said it would show removable disk in the "My Computer" but it is not even there. I did restart computer couple times and nothing shows up! I don't know what is going on. I did check the pacakge and it said complitable with Vista so it SHOULD work but it is not at all. I'm about to pull my hair out since I have to have my pictures on computer so I can put them on CD since I'm running out of the room on memory card.

Thank you in advance.

Ohiomom - Welcome to the PC World Community.

First I assume that the flash card reader you bought is a USB device. A few questions for you -

1. Have you connected any other USB devices to this machine. ie: have you used a flash drive to carry files with you, or have you connected an external drive for backups, etc.

2. Were you trying only the front panel USB ports or did you also try the ones on the back of the computer?

Note: Most newer computers have two controllers and the front ports are connected to one via an internal cable, while the ones on the back are part of the motherboard and connected to the second controller. I have had devices that would work with one but not the second.

3. Would you post the brand and model of the card reader you bought, and the make and model of the computer. Warning - never ever post your computers serial no. online.

Yes it is a USB device.

1. This is first one for me... while I have used USB devices like webcam and wacom tablet, but never flash drive or backup drive.

2. I have tried front panel and and hub... I will try back panel to see if it works.

3. The brand is Digital Concepts and model is CR-35TD-P

My computer is Dell Dimension C521

Let me try back panel...

I still have one question for you - have you ever used anything connected to the front USB panel. The reason I'm asking is if you have never sucessfully connected anything to the front panel, then the cable may be disconnected. If you find that the case, please post back.

I'm glad we now have the card reader working. I have an older HP desktop and when I was on dial-up I purchased a USB modem. It would not work on the back panel, but worked fine connected to the front. Everything else I have, worked on both. You now have experience with the quirkiness of USB devices.

Yes I have connected my camera via USB on front panel before and it did work so I guess it was just memory card reader. I had HP desktop and I loved it so I'm lil bit awkward with Dell. I have a question. If I want to take memory card out of the reader, do I have to click on "Eject" on the Windows or can I just take it out? I'm only asking since it is my first memory card reader.

Thanks in advance.

Ok - so it is apparently a slight glitch between the card reader and the one controller. It does happen.

I would always eject the card. That command actually does two thing, it first flushes the onboard memory of open files destined to the card reader and saves them. You may note if you have a light on the reader that indicates activity, some file activity immediately after selecting that option. Then it turns off the power to the drive. At that point you should get a message that the reader can be removed. If that is your only USB device, the little green icon in the tray will also disappear.

If you pull it out too soon you will damage the file as it has not been completely saved. You may also physically damage the device with a static spark if the device is powered up when you remove it. It takes a few seconds and will avert disaster. I have several dead drives because I reached down and pulled them out too soon.
