Hi ElHombreNuclear and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

The Discussion to which you have posted your concern is in relation to the news article. I have branched your issue into its own Discussion. This will allow as many of our members as possible a chance to see and to respond to your question.

To start to answer your question, I would advise you to review some of the related Discussions within both the Windows Community and the Answer Line Community. In short, you do not have to upgrade as of yet However, please note that eventually, it will come to a point where you will have no choice but to upgrade. Since SP3 is presumably the last major security patch for Windows XP, it may come to a point where some of the applications you use may require SP3 to be installed.

Hi, I don't know which version of XP you are running. I do not have Windows One Care installed, so am not bothered by that. I might add, that I have not yet installed SP3 either. I use the Windows Update service, but NOT ON AUTOMATIC . I got one notification for SP3 and it disappeared when I clicked on it and hasn't reappeared since, just security updates. I am running XP MCE 2005 and have been reluctant to install SP3. coastie65

Why not install it. Its the latest service pack from Microsoft. I have it and i don't see any difference between sp2 and sp3.

Release notes for Service Pack 3

Don't dread on it trying to decide if it's completely worth it or not to do the upgrade. I haven't noticed any significant changes prior to SP2. Just keep installing the latest security patches for Windows if it makes you feel better. I haven't read the release notes for what has been added, but that will be for you to choose.

:D Hi :

I think you should seriously consider uninstalling "Windows Live One Care" ; I would NOT

have this product on my computer and see very few, if any, Expert "Malware-Fighters"

recommend it . Would be better off having 2 antiSPYWARE/antiTROJAN programs, like

the FREE Ver of "SUPERAntiSpyware" and/or the FREE Ver of MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware .

And several Microsoft Most Valuable Professional on the Aumha.net Forums had very

unkind "words" about it .

Hey elhombre!!

This is what Woody from Ask Woody.com , had to say about

installing SP3:

|!http://www.askwoody.com/images/logos/MSDEFCON4.gif!Looks like Microsoft has fixed the last big-time problems with June's "Black Tuesday" patches. The [re-release

of MS08-030 - which, golly, didn't even patch Windows XP SP2 or SP3
machines - seems to have brought the big bad patch back into line.
Other Black Tuesday patches seem to be OK.
I'm recommending that you install all outstanding Microsoft patches, with two exceptions:
If you run XP, don't install Windows XP Service Pack 3. I tried
to run the SP3 upgrade on a laptop over the weekend and ran into all
sorts of problems. Ultimately I simply wiped the disk and re-installed
Windows from scratch. Not a pretty picture. SP3 doesn't have anything
you need, and it can cause grief. Avoid it. |

So, If you would like to install SP3 , you might just run into problems.

and if you are not familiar with the ins and outs of software then it

could become problematic.

Once you install SP3 IF you so desire and IF you run into problems then,

you could just do a system restore to a previous good point.

Make very sure to CREATE A RESTORE POINT BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT A SP3 INSTALL.

Just install it considering a normal update. Very little changes , mostly it contains previous patches. The user wont even see any difference in performance.
