Hi, the question i have today is, is there any reason to go to more than 2mb of ram on 2.2mhz pc on a amd athlon 64,right now i have (2) stick,s of 512
and (1)stick of 1024mb.
I have read that a pc will run faster if ram is the same size.
I have a 2.2mhz amd athlon 64. bios clock is 201 mhz can you change this,thank,s

Hi {user:username=whisky}
I guess your processor is 2.2GHz and not 2.2 MHz , RAM is 2GB and not 2 MB. That looks like a typo.
Now to your question. Yes a pc will perform better if matched pairs of RAM are used but only if your motherboard supports dual channel operation and the memory modules are installed in correct channels. When i say matched pairs - it means same size , same speeds , latency and every other specifications,preferably of same brand.
You have 2 GB as this time , i think there is no need to increase from that . If you want to , then its user's preference - you may add 1 GB more.
Regarding bios clocks - they can be changed but it is not recommended as it voids your warranty and can lead to hardware failure . Moreover if you dont have sufficient information about doing such changes , it will be wise to stay away from those settings.

It's all up to you. Are you satisfied with the current speed of your computer? Do you have multiple applications opened at once? Do you think you would benefit from having more than 2 gigs of memory? What is your current Operating System?

I won't dwell on matched pairs/dual channel memory configuration stuff...[~71480] gave an excellent response on that.
I will say that I will disagree some about sticking with 2 GB. IF you are doing typical stuff (browsing, email, word processing, gaming) and typically only running one or two applications at a time, then I will agree that 2 GB will likely be more than enough and you will likely not see much gain by going beyond 2 GB. IF, OTOH, you use a LOT of applications at the same time (lots of multitasking) and some are processor/memory intensive programs (say something like Photoshop for example), then going beyond 2 GB can be a good thing. It will really depend on how much multitasking you use.

I've got 1.5GB on my machine and on occasion I do heavy multitasking. I also have a G-15 keyboard that, among other things, displays CPU and memory usage. While the CPU usage has often hit 100%, I have yet to see memory usage above 75% (of 1.5GB).
Oh, I forgot to mention that my video shares mobo memory.

I will note that I said heavy multitasking AND using memory intensive programs. I will agree that there lots of "heavy multitasking" that can be fine with 2 GB of memory, but if you start doing a lot of multitasking with the likes of Photoshop, Illustrator, and CADD type programs (amoung others), then more than 2 GB can be of benefit. And then factor in how cheap memory is these days, you end up with very little downside to going to 3 or even 4 GB of memory for the few occasions where it might be useful.
