Hi there, I was wondering if anyone could help me with my enquiry? - I am currently connected to the Internet via Telstra Bigpond's Wireless Broadband and am wanting to change to another ISP on ADSL (NOT ADSL2/2+ as it is not available in my area) - My uncertainty is that the ISP said they "...do not technically support Windows Vista". Anyway, my landline has been tested and ADSL is available. Are there any hidden compatability issues I should be aware of when purchasing a Modem? - My setup is Windows Vista, connection speed of ISP is 1500 and the connection must support PPPoE. So, hoping this is enough information for someone to help me out with my enquiries, please let me know if there is anything in particular I should be careful about when buying a Modem. Thank you all for any help in advance.
Kind regards,
Janet

Hi
First thing - ISP should provide you the ADSL modem. Its like that only at my place - they give the option of taking their modem for or to use your own .It may be different at your place. If they are giving one in the internet plan then you may use that only. So check that from your ISP .
Secondly - when you are connecting to the ADSL modem using the ethernet (cat5) cable, you wont be needing any drivers for that. So any old modem(adsl) will also work in that case.No compatibility problem in this. Infact i m using a very old adsl2+ modem which was given by my ISP for XP and works with vista. USB connection to the same needs drivers .Thats where you have to see whether the device has vista compatibility.
Look out for the vista certified logo everytime you make a purchase.

Also make sure the modem is ADSL/ADSL2+ .
Now you say that your ISP isn't providing tech support for vista. That seems very odd to me. There is no difference as far as configuration of dsl modems is concerned in Xp or vista. And i cant think of any reason why they are indifferent to vista . But the settings are ISP specific , only they can tell you about those to get the net working. So ask them regarding this also.

Thank you for your reply PIY, :)
TPG soul is the ISP and in their email to me they said.
"...Please be informed that TPG Soul do not Technically support Windows Vista Operating System. If you know how to configure Vista for internet connection, you should not experience any problem connecting with us. TPG Soul Helpdesk will assist you as much as they can, however for any circumstance that you would be needing technical support, you will need to call your technical contact for further support."
They have also sent another email saying that they can provide (at a cost) a modem to connect to the Internet via TPG which is plug and play which provides both usb and ethernet ports.
I just find it all a little confusing. They can supply me with a modem to connect to the Internet, but I don't understand about the Vista situation...I have sent them 3 emails asking what they mean and they just keep telling me the same thing, so I don't know if I can or cannot connect to the internet via TPG on their modem using Vista on my system. All rather confusing to me????
I keep smiling though :)

This would be your preference whether you want to use their modem or to purchase one yourself. You can decide that depending on how much they are charging you and how much a new one will cost. So its up to you. And using the modem through ethernet port will be faster and easier.
I also find this situation confusing when the ISP people say that they cannot provide technical support for vista. Somewhat amusing also. But from their mail and from my knowledge , there should be no problem in getting internet. As i said before its same for Xp and vista , no difference in configuration of modem.
