Norton Scan Will Not Complete - Error Code 0x800706be

hi all i am not sure what this is but i am using norton virus any way press the button to do a deep scan any way as it beagn to do this it said Norton program had encounterd an error and has stopped this was the nuber but it took me directly to a blank web page 0x800706be...what you think this could be?

Gary66, googling that error code come up with a lot of references, but the only thing in common was "file access" as some listed remote file access and others occured during updates.

Could you give us some information about your machine - make and model if a manufactured machine, motheboard make and mode if custom built. What operating system are you running and what SP level.

Is it for sure during the scan, or is Norton's trying to do a live update before the scan. Back when I didn't know anybetter and was running Norton's on my HP desktop (it came from HP with it), I had similar problems with live update that it would download the info and then die. I fixed it once then it happened again and then I fixed it for good by removing Norton's. Some like it, but most of the regular members of this community do not.

Also, does it always seem to happen at the same place, and does it give you a file name when it dies?

Hi Gary, Don't panic. Best thing to try is to uninstall Norton and then a clean reinstall. You will need to go to the symantec site and get their removal tool to do this as using Add / Remove progarams will not completely remove it. Also after having done that, I would recommend using windows explorer and doing a search under both symantec and norton to be absolutely sure all that stuff is gone. Personally and you will find many, many members in agreement with this, I would dump Norton and go with a Free AV program such as Avast!. OS Vista Home.

MoBo..asus rebublic of game maximus Intel

cpu Pentium 3.core duo 3gtz/3gz.

Graphics card nvidia 7900GTX Bliss.500mb.

Zalman cpu fan.

Corsair power supply

crucial balisticks 2gig.ddr2

litescribe dvd840.HP

Creative sound Blaster Augigy2 zs.

Net Gear Router.

i have used Avast and avg in the past but, they onlty stop virus not every thing else. i have done a deep scan before and it has been fine this is the first time i have got this certificate poping.

Not too many people on these forums like Norton. There are other programs that work better than Norton and don't hog as much resources.

Hi Gary, AVG 8.0 has AV & Antispyware. I use Avast! for AV and Spysweeper for Antispyware. I have SUPERantispyware as a backup scanner to Spysweeper. As I said in my last post, you need to completely remove and reinstall norton as the installation may be corrupted. Just follow what I said and you should be able to clean it out before you reinstall. Norton and McAfee both are nortorious for taking over your computer and they both use a lot of resources as well as being intrusive. coastie

Hi Gary,
This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.
What Norton product and version are you using? Please reply back and let me know.
If a scan is stooping prematurely it can indicate a deep infection on your system or it can be a problem with your installation of Norton. The first thing you should do is to try manually running LiveUpdate by going to 'Start"->"Run" and type in "luall.exe" (without the qutoes). Then follow the prompts to check for and install any available updates.
After the updates have been applied, restart your computer into Windows Safe Mode, launch your Norton product and complete a "Full System Scan."
Please follow these steps to properly uninstall and reinstall Norton. Please make note of your activation key and registration information.
1. Click on the following link to download the Norton Removal Tool:

2. After you run the tool, please restart your computer. Then log in to Windows again and run the removal tool again. Restart your computer after it is finished running the second time as well.
3. Make sure that your internet connection is working properly, and then reinstall your Norton product. Towards the end of the installation process, the LiveUpdate feature will automatically run and download and install updates to both the program files and definition files.
4. After you have reinstalled Norton and LiveUpdate has run, complete a Full System Scan.
