Hello, I have a virus and it opens this message whenever I attempt to open a folder on my computer. What can I do? I have scanned for the virus with Norton but it can't locate any viruses. Does anyone know of this? Also, when you close that box ^ you can only do it by clicking yes or no. It then sends me to this website Link Removed Oh, and if you click yes, then it sends you to a website that has no address and is a file download, same as the one that is on the website if you click no.

Also I must add that when I do open some files, it gives windows explorer a problem and makes it restart then after a delay the file will open. This has been common with opening images.

So please, please someone help me. Thank you so much.

Hi Brian, and welcome to PCWorld Communities.

Hmmmm... it looks pretty suspicious to me. Another member had a similar situation as yours, but it turned out to be bogus.

#1 - The fact that you're being re-routed to another off-the-wall website is mighty suspicious.

#2 - If it was a legit message it would probably direct you to your own AntiVirus program.

A few months ago, I had something similar happen to me. Sometimes when I went to Photobucket I would get this weird message that my computer was at risk and to download the scanning service they provided (I forget the words.) It happened to me 3 times.

I had to contact Photobucket support and they reported back to me that they'd had some complaints about another website spamming their system. It's was a phishing hoax and they fixed the issue. After that, they did a major overhaul of their security system and asked people change their passwords.

The one thing I would suggest is to do a System Restore - go back like 2 days (or even 1 week) before you started receiving this message, and that may take care of this situation for you.

Please, post back and let us know of your progress. I'm sure that other members will have other ideas/suggestions for you.

System restore does not get rid of viruses. Your machine will still be infected. First off what antivirus and antispyware program do you have? 2nd if you dont have any download http://www.avast.com/ avast its free antivirus and do a full system scan. 2nd download superantispyware http://www.superantispyware.com/ and do a full system scan for antispyware. I would recommend getting spybot too and scanning just in case superantispyware doesnt detect everything. http://www.safer-networking.org/ << spybot. If for any reason you cant get rid of the virus or whatever scan in safe mode. Heres a couple documents about antivirus and antispyware http://forums.pcworl...m/docs/DOC-1141

h3. WARNING - PLZ DONT CLICK ON THE ABOVE LINK .
mods plz remove that hyperlink. I m suspicious about that link, most probably its a malware site. I m trying to dig it up.

Ok, found it . Its a browser hijacker and you are infected badly at the moment. You need to quickly run these two scans -
rogue remover
malware bytes anti-malware

It would be better if {user:username=SpiritWind} handles this issue.

your not going to get any virus just by clicking the link. Site advisor has it marked yellow only. It only will do harm if it ask you to install active x which usually is ie. If your using firefox your fine

:D Hi :

You have the "classic" symptoms of a "Rogue" Program; Best to start with the 2

Recommendations mentioned by piyushsingh . What are the current Security Program(s)

on your computer AND What is the Name of your Operating System ?

Thanks for having them remove the link. I actually didn't try to make it a hyperlink and didn't really want it to come out that way. I just wanted to provide it in case someone wanted to look a little more into it, then they could cut and paste. What is rogue remover and malware bytes anti-malware? Also, I have run Norton Internet Security Scan and Windows Defender scans on my computer. Full scans, two times and quick scans two times. I have even looked at the task manager to find out what pops up and activates but I can't figure it out.
Since you said you found it, how did you figure it out?

Are those links you provided safe? Does anyone else know about them? Are they safe? (Sorry, I just don't need more viruses, you understand I'm sure.)

{user:username=briandpg2} - There is no problem in providing links here but that could have been disastrous for someone who mistakenly clicks on it. The name of the link itself was suspicious (free virus scan something). The page was an simulation of XP explorer with fake results all over the place . And it is made to force more malware download. So it was removed by mods.

The two links i provided are from malwarebytes.com . Both of these are safe to use and most of the regular members here on PCW forums use both of them . They are recommended by the security expert here - SpiritWind .No need to worry about the links we provide. So run both of them and post back the results.

sn309641 says superantispyware worked for him , so try that also after these two. Superantispyware

Hi SN. For future reference, please do not post your concern in someone an existing Discussion. Even though your situation may appear to be similar, it is always best to open your own Discussion and allow as many of our members an opportunity to review your problem. Latching onto an active Discussion could potentially either take focus away from the current issue or leave your concern on the back burner.

Posted Image Hi :

Your current Choices of Security programs are NOT the best; there are better and

sometimes FREE programs available . IF you check the Results of testing done by the

INDEPENDENT Researchers at www.av-comparatives.org/ , you will notice that

Norton scored a very poor 18% "Prevention Rate" in their May 2008 "Retrospective/

ProActive" Testing; even the FREE Avast Antivirus scored 28% !

MalwareBytes.org is a Site staffed by experienced, trained, certified, Volunteer

"Malware-Fighters" who also have developed some highly SPECIALIZED programs to

counteract some SPECIFIC "types" of malware.

My Recommendations for antiSPYWARE/antiTROJAN protection and File cleaning

"echo" those of certified Malware-Fighter "Mr. Charlie" at

You will notice that "Windows Defender" is NOT in his "List" .

I believe that was the virus^. I used Rogue Remover but it didn't do much and had trouble updating and whatever. So I installed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and it worked awesome. It even removed all of the other crap you see above. Thank you piyushsing. SpiritWind also provided a good website althought it is a little confusing. The post later with the three downloads on it seemed like something I might look into later. But this fixed it as far as I can tell. Wooooo! Freedom from the tyranny of Viruses! Thank you everyone who posted trying to help, I greatly appreciate it.

I did have to restart my computer to have Malwarebytes' fully remove that virus though. Just a side note. Oh, and it only pinpointed the above circled virus for the restart leading me to believe that was the virus. (Also, I pinpointed that file earlier but was unable to remove it. I used task manager to find it, but thankfully Malwarebytes' finished the rest that I couldn't do.)

Thanks everyone!

Posted Image Hi :

The "Description" of WHAT MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware "detected" is the LAST 2 Lines of

the Scan, namely the "Zlob Trojan" ; this is far more serious than a "virus." Would

encourage you to read the info at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zlob_trojan ; you will notice

that there are, at least, 32 "Variants" of this . When someone has this on their computer,

I always recommend having the computer "checked out" by One of those experienced,

certified, Volunteer "Malware-Fighters" I made reference to, because MalwareBytes'

Anti-Malware may NOT have "detected" ALL of "It" . There are other "specialized" programs

available to look for undetected "portions" . Therefore, I recommend you go to

[http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/] ; "register", then go to their "Malware Removal -

HijackThis Logs" sub-forum and follow the Directions there, mentioning how the

"Anti-Malware" program detected the "Zlob Trojan" but unsure IF ALL "portions" were

detected and removed .

I know that this question has been answered, but I just wanted to ask you something:

Do you have any Anti Spyware and Anti Virus programs running scans on your machine and protecting you?

The only ones I have are Norton Internet Security, Windows Defender, and the new Rogue Remover and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Do you have any specific recommendations? Ones that you use frequently?

I use

Anti-Virus
AVG Free 8

Firewall -
ZoneAlarm Free

Spyware Scanners -
Spybot Search and Destroy
SuperAntiSpyware
AVG Anti-Spyware
Adware 2008

Spyware blockers-
Spywareblaster
Spywareguard

Utilities -
Ccleaner
WinPatrol
HijackThis

_

I suggest you don't use norton its easily targeted and hard to remove from your computer, and just generally not worth paying for. I don't trust Microsoft to keep my computer safe so I don't use Windows Defender. The other ones you use I haven't ever tried.

You might want to have a look at this document {document:id=1141} .

As Aurora has mentioned norton isnt a good protection , its is better to remove it using the removal tool from here .Windows defender is not recommended by anyone here , so disable it also.
