Hey whatup!!

It is well documented that a layered method of protection is way

better than a full suite from a well known security provider.

As an example , I'll take my security set-up.

FIREWALL:

PC Tools Firewall Plus . This is a application based rules.

Meaning that you can either allow or block any programs from making a connection to

the internet. It also gives you the opportunity to give any program a variable on connection

to the internet. Meaning that you can have a program receive connections but, not send

any information. You can even have the firewall ask you permission if a program is allowed to

use the ram on your PC. But, this option is a bit invasive as it will ask and block any new program

that you are installing until you give the go ahead.

ANTIVIRUS:

Avira AntiVir Personal . This one is known to have the best detection rate

amongst the free apps. But, this one is not for everyone. You should be able to "Play" around with

software if you are to use this one. It will also have a pop-up when it up-dates everyday asking you to

up-date to the " Paid-For " program. I use this one and don't mind clicking on the OK button to get the

better protection.

Most of the members who use free antivirus will be using Avast AntiVirus .

This is a very good antivirus plus it has e-mail protection which Avira does not have. All for free.

ANTISPYWARE :

SUPERAntispyware Professional .There's not much that gets by

this one. You can either have the free version or the Paid For version. Now, remember , this is

MY config. I have bought this one for $29.95 for a LIFETIME SUBSCRIPTION. So, this is a one time fee. The free one has the

same up-dates as the paid version the difference is that the paid version up-dates itself and has REAL TIME SHIELDS.

Other then that , it is the same.

I also have as a stand-alone,meaning a manual start and up-date, the specialised scanner from:

MalwareBytesAntiMalware . If ever you should download and install a

Rogue program , this antimalware program will get most if not all of the installed infections. But, it is not limited

to Rogues. It WILL catch anything that the others missed.

As an added protection for my browsers I have also purchased and installed :

SpywareBlaster . This is for your browsers and works in the background.

The free version does not up-date itself but, still works in the background as the paid for version. You would have to up-date generally

on a weekly basis. It put me back $9.99 for a years subscription.

The next is a Uninstaller. This would go a long way in helping remove unnecessary remaining registry keys that would

otherwise clog up the registry. Revo Uninstaller . How come this is still free we really don't know.

It is about the best you can get ,Paid or otherwise.

So, as you can see, the first year it cost me $39.95 . This year cost me $9.99 for a Complete Security Package. This kind of security

you cannot buy from a single provider. I have not seen any infections in a very long time. And for ten bucks a year I will not see

any infections for a long time to come.

There is another security program that I should mention (also free). It is a Virtual Browser.

It is called Sandboxie Virtual Browser . This is a browser contained in a virtual environment.

You can surf the web like any other browser but, if you happen to land on a Bad Site and get an infection well, it will be

contained in the virtual browser. You then delete what is contained in the virtual environment and no infection will

be downloaded to your HDD.

OK, whatup, this is how I protect myself or my PC against the big bad web. If you have any questions or just want

extra info. I won't be far.

Hey Flashorn

I'm going to keep those in mind, actually save the link to this discussion if what I have doesn't work. It's already frozen my computer a couple times, not sure if it was either or both, but the icons were gone, just the screensaver on my desktop. Had to unplug the computer and manually restart....twice. I can't see where in the Avast to do a regular schedule anti virus scan. It says in the menu, can't find the menu. But I'll keep looking around, gotta be there somewhere. The firewall seems to be goig ok. We'll see. I noticed a program you use, Sandibox, I have a paid sub. to Shadowsurfer I use, It's pretty good. I use it most of the time. I didn't know there were others like it free. Returnil I know is free and tried it but didn't like it too much, can't remember the exact reason, configuration problems I think. Anyhow, tuneup, shadow, adaware are the last of the paid subs. this is why I thought trying some freebee's would be good. Im going to stop buying if I can get the free ones that work just as well, but sometimes paid is better. Like the firewall you said is a lifetime membership, thats a good deal. When Tuneup runs out, it'll be a while, but I'll drop that too. Shadow surfer I believe is a lifetime membership, (29.95). I'm going to look those programs over that you just wrote about, know a couple of them PC Tools firewall plus I've used, I may go back to that if this doesn't work, I remember it was pretty good. Spywareblaster is running right now, but free version. Thanks for those tips!

Hey whatup!!

I think you might be having a conflict with your security programs.

Just a couple of thoughts here.

You did disable the Firewall in your OS right?

If I'm not mistaken , you have XP. so, make sure that the firewall is not working.

Also the suite that you already have on there, did you DISABLE both the

Firewall AND the Antivirus? As you might know , we do NOT run two Firewalls nor

do we run two AntiVirus with real time shields at the same time, otherwise , you WILL

get Conflicts and will result in what you just experienced.

So, if it's not done then Disable your suite and then enable the free programs.

Otherwise you will never get them to work properly.

As a rule of thumb : Only One OF Each At The Same Time.

The others are to be started Manually. The other programs can

coexist with the primary programs but, started on demand.

If anything else comes up well , I'll be here.
