I've made the ubuntu switch (dual bootin win/lin)
how can i get my linux computer to show up on a windows network? (browsing for windows computers while running linux is easy and without annoying lockups)

As this thought has occurred to me,

Is ubuntu internet secure right out of the box/final installation?

My main concern is remote connections exploited thru windows or vise versa.

Use Samba for networking your Ubuntu to your Windows [https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpSamba]
Secondly, the internet is basically safe out of the box. Ubuntu comes with all their ports closed which is one of the major issues for windows. Many people claim not to need a firewall and while I believe that its true that you don't have to have one, I still think you should get one. Many people I've talked to say that you only need to know how to monitor packets sent and received to see if anythings going on (I think). The problem with most of this is that many people have a windows mindset when trying to work with Ubuntu. Many people out there with Ubuntu don't have and to an extent necessarily need the same things Windows does to keep it happy and healthy. One thing to keep in mind about Ubuntu security though is to not share your admin sudo password. Make it difficult, and try to download everything you can from the universe repositories itself.

On my Ubuntu partition I have Firstarter for a firewall, you can find it in the 'universe'.

samba is easy to configure . The guide that Aurora pointed you to should be sufficient.
