Microsoft .NET Framework not installing Internal Error 2908
#1
Posted 29 July 2008 - 08:54 AM
Working on a friends computer HP Windows XP SP2 as he wanted me to install AutoCAD on it. Well AutoCAD needs Miscrosoft .NET Framework to run. He doesn't have it on his PC. And here is my problem;
"Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 and 2.0 failed to install. So I thought maybe it is because Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 is not installed so I tried to install it and it then gave me these error messages; first the install fails and it says Internal Error 2908. {C702B474-1598-477F-8E6A-87A05B37F0BB} Then I click OK and it says Error 1935. An error occured during installation of assembly 'Microsoft_VsaVb, Version="7.0.3300.0", PublicKeyToken="b03f5f7f11d50a3a", Culture="neutral". Please refer to help and support for more info. Then it says that Microsoft .NET Framework (English) setup has ended prematurly. If this persists please contact product support." I have searched around on Microsoft and different places and really can't find a solution myself.
My friend had the AutoCAD already installed on this PC one time and had to do a total system restore, or something like that, at one time. My questions are: When he did that could it have messed up a file somewhere or something that is not enabling me to install the Miscrosoft .NET Framework? Does anyone know what to do or where I can start as I really need to get this AutoCAD installed on his PC.
I would appreciate all the advice, information and help anyone may suggest!

Best to start a little earlier in the discussion, such as WHICH SPECIFIC Version of
AutoCAD !? The last 3 versions are "2007", "2008" and "2009" . Since there are many
different "Versions" of "NETFramework", not ALL of them may or should be installed !?
Generally, I recommend the "NETFramework" Series be avoided, IF possible . Were there
any "Instructions" that came with the AutoCAD that mentioned the SPECIFIC Version(s) of
NETFramework that were needed !? IF yes, details. PLEASE .
I doubt "upgrading" to SP3 would make any different, plus any Upgrade should have some
"preliminary" work done, such as getting any new manufacturer "Driver(s)" AND using a very
reliable antiSPYWARE/antiTROJAN program to make sure the computer is malware-free .

Spiritwind long time no hear. Well now we have another problem as Sp3 installation FAILED too. Something is deffinitely wrong with this PC. I did a scan of the windows protected files and a check disk scan today before he just tried to install the Sp3 and they checked out fine. Before we go on let me answer your questions.
He wanted me to install AutoCAD 2005, 2007 and 2008 (Architecture). Mainly he wanted the 2008 (Architecture) so I tried that first and it tried to install microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 and failed. Then I tried the 2005 and it wanted microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, of which I then tried to install both the 1.1 and 2.0 from windows and they failed too. So I tried to install microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 thinking that maybe not having any of them might be preventing them all from installing, of which I found out is not true.
Ok, he has CA antivirus and antispyware provided free by Road Runner high speed online. He won't change it either. He did have Norton and changed it, I don't know if he uninstalled Norton correctly with a Norton removal tool or not, to the CA. He has recently done a virus scan and does one once a week and says its clean. He didn't have his CA antispyware activated and I activated it today and it found some tracking cookies and two files that were P2P I left those as I did not know what they were and deleted the tracking cookies. I can install MalwareBytes Rogue Remover and Panda Antirootkit and see what they come up with too.
Whatever is happening is not good as the installation of Sp3 even failed. But check disk and windows protected files scans came out ok. It installs programs and applications but none of the aforementioned system changes. Any ideas where to start in this situation?

Oh, I forgot to mention now but did in the original post. He had to do a system restore once before he said he put it back to factory settings using the drive allocated for that. I am not at the PC in question will be tomorrow early morning. It is also running slower now than it ever has.

I went to the Site of Autodesk, the Makers of AutoCAD ( does he have their product !? ) and
found their System Requirements as follows :
"For Microsoft Windows XP SP2:
* 1 GB RAM
* 750 MB free disk space for installation
* 1024x768 VGA with true color
* Microsoft® Internet Explorer® 6.0 (SP1 or higher) "
Does he meet these Requirements ?
IF he does, I feel there are 2 different Courses of Action :
1) Go to their website and make use of their "Services and Support " Section .
2) IF you feel there's something basically "wrong" with the computer and the
AutoCAD - NETFramework problem(s) are a sympton, I would be willing to take a look at
"WHAT" is on his computer by you installing the "HijackThis" program, most easily down-
loaded from www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis and after Installation, click the
"Open the Misc Tools section" button, then click the "Open Uninstall Manager" button .
A "List" should appear and somehow you get that "List" Posted in this Thread .
P.S. "P2P" usually is short for "Peer-to-Peer" program(s), which when used, QUADRUPLES
the Chances of getting malware on a computer . Rather than MalwareBytes' RogueRemover,
I recommend you use a "Full Scan" of "SUPERAntiSpyware" and IF anything other than
Adware/tracking Cookies are detected, it would be wise to Post its "Report" .

I believe the PC in question meets the requirements you specified. I am going over to his house in a little while and will double check. I am going to install hijackthis and and do what you say and install SuperAntiSpyware and do a scan with it. When I install Super I need to shut off his antivirus and antispyware first, right? Also do you want me to use the hijackthis "First" to see what it running, what problems it can tell us if any are going on and can be done from that end?

As far as I know, using the "FREE" Version of "SUPERAntiSpyware" should NOT "Conflict"
with any other security program ; therefore, "normally" there should be no need to
temporarily disable any of his other security . The Specific HijackThis "instructions" I gave
are NOT to see WHAT is "running" ( that MAY come later ), but to see What programs are
on the computer . Best to do the "SUPERAntiSpyware" FIRST, so that when you do the
Hijackthis , I can see to what degree SUPERAntiSpyware was installed .

SpiritWind, I installed SuperAntiSpyware. I then updated it and did a scan, two hard-drives took a long time. It found a bunch of cookies and just one other thing that I am rather concerned and not sure of what to do about. It is this an: "Unclassified.Unknown Origin" at "C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32GTIDMTJH.EXE" . I have not done anything else to it. I haven't even removed the cookies. I haven't installed "hijackthis" yet either. I did update on SuperAntiSpyware again this morning and it acquired some other threat definitions that it could scan for, trojans, adware etc... but that will take damn near all day.
Ok, what to do about what Super found and do you want me to install hijackthis now and do what you said to do with it? Oh, I also saw "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 version when Super was scanning. So it is there somewhere. You think we can use Revo Uninstaller to get it out, as it might be messed up, and then reinstall it after everything else is taken care of etc...
Thank you again for your help!

Since doing a Google "Search" revealed no INFO about "GTIDMTJH.EXE", it DEFINITELY
should be "Quarantined" . When the SUPERAntiSPYWARE Scan finished, you should have
let it do "its thing" to Delete the Cookies and Quarantined that "exe" . I assume the
"Cookies" were Firefox-based !? Nice to hear you noticed the "Microsoft .NETFramework
1.1" ; this MAY be from your unsuccessful attempt to install it earlier !? Did you notice any
of the "other" NETframework's you tried installing ? Not being able to Sign In to PCWorld
from his PC really makes the "Process" time-consuming; perhaps IF you Quarantine that
"exe" at the end of another SUPERAntiSpyware Scan, you will be able to "Sign In" here !?
Feel free to use the RevoUninstaller, for NETframework and any others you feel would be
appropiate . However, to be more through, I would like that "Uninstall List" from
HijackThis, to see WHAT Programs are on his computer ; I realize having to hand-copy
that "List" would be a "pain".

I installed Everest and Belarc on this PC just in case we need them.
I found the reference to Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 in the "Administrators Tools" it has an "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Wizards shortcut" and a "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Configuration shortcut". When I click on the wizard it gives me this "ConfigWizard.exe-.NET Framework initialization error" . Then it gives me this "Please set registry key HKLMSoftwareMicrosoft.NET FrameworkInstallRoot to point to the .NET Framework install location".
Then when I click on the "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Configuration shortcut" if gives me this: "Microsoft Managment Console" "Snap-in failed to initialize" "Name: <unknown>" "CLSID: {1270E004-F895-42BE-8070-DF90D60CBB75}". Then it says ".NET Configuration 1.1 Snap-in Creation Failed".
As I said earlier maybe we need to uninstall or find this "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1" and uninstall it somehow. I have Revo Uninstaller on CD I could install on it but that will only work if Revo finds it or any references to it.
Also the issue with Sp3 not installing could this be why?
Please refer back to my two or three previous posts in this thread too.

I guess you noticed that you Posted your "Latest" 2 Minutes after I Posted a Response to
your previous Posts !? Could be different "Reasons" as to WHY AutoCAD and SP3 will
not install properly . Since you have Belarc installed, it MAY be helpful to use it to Post the
Manufacturer and Model Number of his PC !?

Super has the EXE. file in question in Quarantine. I did not see the end of the scan as my friend came home with his female friend and I had to leave. I just removed all of the cookies, did not restore, removed.
Ok, the PC in question is an HP Model# HP Pavilion, 05 P9859A-ABA 533w 3001211RE101GLEND. On the front it has HP Pavilion 533w.

I haven't used Revo uninstaller yet going to do that after you make your next suggestion or should I go ahead and see if it picks the Framework up. What about it saying to edit that registry entry that I quoted above? I don't know where to point it to though.

I looked up the Specs for the HP Pavilion 533w on the Hewlett - Packard Site and found it
was originally released with ONLY 256 MB of DDR SDRAM; this is far short of the
Mimimum of 1 GB required for AutoCAD 2009 ; even though the minimum RAM MAY be
lower for earlier Editions of AutoCAD, I DEFINITELY want you to check the "System" of
his Control Panel for how much Ram he actually currently has . HP said there was ONLY
a MAXIMUM of 1 GB for this computer allowed .
I would NOT mess with "editing" that "Registry Key" that you mentioned in an earlier Post .
As to his "Uninstall List" ; I spotted many out-of-date Programs, meaning serious security
"Vulnerabilities" which should be uninstalled and possibly "replaced" with the latest Ver :
1) Adobe Acrobat 5.0
2) Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02
3) Shareaza 2.3.1.0
The following should just be uninstalled :
1) Java Web Start
2) LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
3) LiveUpdate 1.6 (Symantec Corporation)
Ask your neighbor about uninstalling :
1) Adobe Flash Player ActiveX
2) easy Internet sign-up
3) Quicken Financial Center
It looks like the computer came with a lot of "crapware" that is still there !? Would
recommend, IF possible, to run the FREE "PC De-Crapifier" that is available at
www.pcdecrapifier.com and discuss its "Findings" with your neighbor !?
#17
Posted 31 July 2008 - 07:10 PM
pcdecrapifier huh, I will check it out tomorrow as I will not be on that PC until tomorrow and then it will be limited as I have to do some other things too. Belarc on my PC shows the .NET Framework I have intsalled so his is not correct as we already know anyway. So you don't think it has something to do with the registry? The failed installation of the .NET Famework and the Sp3.?

Messing with the "Registry" is the LAST thing I would ever recommend . IF you run the
Revo Uninstaller and it "finds" "Parts" of the NETFramework and "removes" them, that
Registry Entry MAY be "uninstalled" as well . Try the easiest, simpliest possible
"Solutions" FIRST .

Well now his "Windows Media Player" was gone when he tried to click on it the other day. Something happened like that I wasn't there so he reinstalled it.
Haven't done anything else to it as I haven't been able to get to it and don't really know what else to do. I am going to update the stuff you said needed it and then uninstall and get rid of some of the stuff not needed too. I am also going to install the decrapifier and run it with him and see what its about.
He is going to buy a TB of new hard-drive also pretty soon to install on this PC. It supposedly comes with some software too that automatically backs
everything up and every time you save something it backs it up etc...
or something like that. He only has 9Gbs on his original 50 or 60 Gb hard-drive and only 30 Gbs left on his other drive that he install in it. Do you think him having only 9Gbs on the original C: could be the reason that Sp3 and the .NET Framework will not install? I just realized this a couple of days ago. You have any recommedations in this process?

I have done it this time I get the points if that is possible. LOL! No, thanks for all of the help in said situation though. I had to figure this problem out as the individual with the PC in question said he was going to get someone else to fix and install said software so I got to digging on Microsoft and came up with some similar discriptions and solutions to the problem at hand.
This is what I did. First, I repaired the "Windows installer" or reinstalled it. Then I manually deleted the URTTemp folder, and the Mscoree.dll file in the System32 folder. Then I went to "Start, run, microsoft .net and deleted the v2.0.50727 folder. After that I removed the windows installer info. with Msizap downloaded and installed from microsoft and ran out of its folder. I then found and deleted the old .NET v.1.3705 and the old .NET v.1.1.4322 folders that were still there from earlier, either attemps or installations of those versions of the .NET Framework. Then I proceeded to install .NET Framework 1.0 and it was a success, then 1.1 then 2.0 and all were successfull.
Here is the link to the info. from microsoft that put me on the right track. It had some registry editing to do to but I left that to the last choice and it turned out I didn't need it. Anyway here is the link: http://support.micro...id=8291&sid=244 . Enjoy!
