I belong to another, non-computer related Forum. When I first post my comments/threads there, I have the Edit option to be able to change/edit my post, but it seems like after a day, I cannot access the Edit function. Everybody I asked there has no problem with the Edit option.


Two days ago I sent then an email asking for help, but I just got a reply from their Customer Service today and they said: "The issue is related to your cookies within your browser and independent of what we can do to affect it."

However, I think it may be more an issue of either SpySweeper or TrendMicro AV deleting the cookies, but I'm not certain. And I just don't know how to allow the cookies to remain (did I say that right?) for this Forum.

It will depend on what browser you are using and if you are using any third party malware/spyware/adware programs that deal with cookies. If you are using JUST Internet Explorer, then under Tools > Internet Options there is the Advanced button under the Privacy tab. It will open up a dialog box that provides some minimal control over cookies. I have mine set to prompt for first party cookies and block third party cookies and allow session cookies. First party cookies are cookies that come directly from the site that you are on. Third party cookies are cookies that some third party (say an advertiser) might use on the first party's website...say an advertisor has a banner ad on a website that might have cookie...that would be a third party cookie. As a result, I block all third party cookies as they are usually advertising related crap. On a VERY rare occasion, a third party cookie might be needed for some feature of a website to work properly.



i don't know about third party programs and how they handle cookies...I don't use such things. I do know that ZoneAlarm Pro (which I use) has a cookie function...but I don't currently use it.

As far as I know, security programs NEVER "automatically" "Delete" Cookies; the User

makes that selection in the "Menu" that appears at the end of a Scan . I like to "retain"

some of my Cookies and having Win XP, I use 2 programs compatible with that OS to

do so . Since I do NOT remember your OS, IF you have XP, I will tell you SPECIFICS ;

they are NOT compatible with Vista . In Internet Options > Advanced , there may be a

Setting in the "Security" portion that says something like "Empty Temporary Internet Files

folder when browser is closed" you should uncheck !?

There are 2 different "sections" in Internet Options that relate to Cookies ; One is accessed

from the Privacy tab, that Max posted about; the Other is accessed from the Advanced tab,

that I posted about at end of my Post. Recommend you check BOTH areas .

I have added the forum's name to the Sites option, (I've done it several times now) but I'm still unable to have the Edit function I was talking about. aaarrrghhh!! X-(

a bit offtopic but adama whats keeping you from changing to firefox or opera. Seriously ie is just plain slow not safe and it just sucks. Opera and FF works 100% fine on vista with no problems at all.

Well, I'm still having the same problem.

Today I called an IT person and she did the Remote Assistance thing. She took the same steps I took yesterday, and even went into the Advanced options.

The Forum's name is in there where I had entered it yesterday; the cookies are fully allowed for the whole Forum Domain, but I'm still unable to use the Edit option to Edit/change an older post. What the IT woman said was that she thought it was something to do on the Forum's end, rather than with my IE7, because everything checked ok on my end.

Hi Adama. Well, I would not jump to that assumption just yet. You have Internet Explorer 7. I know you are sort of hesitant about using any other browser but, as a test, that might be the only way to determine if it issue is on your end or the forum's end. I only know Mozilla Firefox. However, if you decide to go with Opera, I am sure others can assist as well. Download another browser and see if you have the same issue. If you do, then the issue shifts to the forum side. If you do not, it shifts to your side (the browser).

Sweetie, please , do yourself a big favor. If only as MPH says, just for a trial.

We all know that either Firefox or Opera will simply amaze you. I know, I know,

we have discussed this at length before but, this time is different. It would be as an experiment

for you and the forum. You might have to take one the forum LOL!. But, seriously. It would be the only way to know.

One thing you have to know is, If you decide to go with Opera, It will be taking over your Pictures.Every time you want to view

a Picture,it will open in Opera, so go with Firefox. And, as you know if you don't like it well, you simply uninstall all is well.

So, be adventurous and take the plunge! I came over to Vista right?/?

Thanks for your comment. I posted a thread to the Forum in question, and a couple of people have given their comments there as well.

One person said it could be my antimalware program that's deleting the cookies, even though I have added the Forum's name to the Sites Allowed in Internet Options.

Another person said he has no problems and he always has the Edit option available. I'm waiting to see if he expands on his response, because he didn't specify if he has IE7.

As far as FF goes, .... well, you all know how I feel about it, so I won't comment on that again. :p

Yesterday, another Forum member commented that I should try NOT deleting the cookies when it was time to delete my whole Search History last night, to see if there was any change.

It didn't. The Edit option was still unavailable.

So I fired up another report to their Tech Support, and they're checking into why this is happening to me, while other users of IE7 do not have this same problem.

I just came back from that other Forum, and a lady there suggested that I download CCleaner, to clean the cookies and then to add the cookies to keep. Which is what I did with my IE7.

What is CCleaner anyway, isn't it a program to clean the Registry?

What do you think of CCleaner?

Do you think it'll fix the problem I've been having?

CCleaner is used to clean the registry and unused temporary files from Internet browsers that include cookies browsing history. The registry cleaner is used for cleaning missing shared DLLs, unused file extensions and application paths. It gets the job done in a second.

Hi Adama. I personally do not provide software application recommendations; however, LilxKid pretty much answered your question. Honestly, if this does not resolve your issue, you really should test another browser just to see where the issue really lies. We all know you do not like, or want to use, another browser but testing and using are two different things.

Additionally, what is the url to the forum? I use both Internet Explorer and Firefox so I can test this out as well.

I still don't know if I'm going to download CCleaner or not, because I don't really like to download a bunch of stuff to my computer, especially if it's not necessary to my day to day computing.

One of the members at that Forum gave me the suggestion to go into Internet Options, then to General tab. Clicked on Settings button, and then on View Files. This took me to the Temporary Internet Files folder.

I did fine there until I had to do the next steps.

He said that I should be able to find the * .txt files. They start with the name "cookie" And then I was supposed to click on the cookie for the Forum in question, but I had none of that.

I did find the "cookie: my name @ whatever it said.com" but when I clicked on it, it took me to a notepad document with strange letters in it, which I decided not to disturb and closed it.

I think maybe he was referring to XP instead of Vista.

Well, I'm still having the same problems with the Forum in question.

That was one of the reasons I downloaded CCleaner, to clean the old stuff out of my computer, and to be able to say which cookies to Keep. But dang it, that didn't help me fix problem with the Forum.

It did clear out over 30 MBs of stuff, which is good, but I ended up having to uninstall CCleaner because I had mega problems with it.
