i take it you have vista, right?
can you boot into windows/c: drive?
if not, what errors/messages do you get?
I think hp has the menu set for one second, so right after the hp logo on first power-up hit the down arrow key repeatedly until the o/s choice menu comes up. select hp recovery and you should be good to go.

To use the recovery partition most HP computers use the F11 key. I have an HP laptop
with WinXP home and this is what I do:
- You start your computer and you'll see the initial text.
- Normally in the bottom of the screen you'll see a message like "press f11 for recovery"
- When you press f11 you enter the recovery application
Once you enter the app, you just have to follow the instructions step by step.
I had the extra problem that my computer instead of showing the normal text showed a splash screen,
so I just started pressing f11 several times the moment I saw anything on the screen until I entered
the recovery application.
I've seen that this works both for PCs and laptops.
